Is Bill O’Brien confident enough to trade Jadeveon Clowney to Tennessee Titans?

NFL.com/NFL Network’s Gregg Rosenthal includes Tennessee Titans in Jadeveon Clowney trade destinations.

I wrote earlier in the week about why the Tennessee Titans may be a team to watch for Jadeveon Clowney, especially if this situation lasts into the regular season.

In his latest article, NFL media’s Gregg Rosenthal agreed when he listed the Titans as one of the 7 teams that could trade for the Houston Texans EDGE.

The only issue in the way? That would be the “chutzpah” of the Texans head coach Bill O’Brien :

"Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans: Both teams have plenty of cap space and could use the edge presence that Clowney provides, but would the Texans trade Clowney to a division rival? It didn’t stop O’Brien’s old boss in New England from sending Drew Bledsoe to the Bills, but O’Brien may not have that level of chutzpah."

Sounds like a challenge to me! B.O.B. should trade him to the Titans just on principal.

All jokes aside, it is interesting that the man he hopes to model his career after has never been afraid to trade assets before the depreciate in value. No asset has a bigger drop off in potential return than franchise tagged player who won’t re-sign with that team.

More from Titan Sized

The Texans don’t really have the standard option of letting a guy walk to pick up a compensatory pick for the 2021 NFL Draft. With so much cap space and a cap floor to hit, letting Clowney walk and not signing an expensive free agent seems impossible or negligent depending on your point of view.

So Houston basically has no leverage outside of other teams bidding against each other. Even then, until he signs his franchise tag the team can’t trade him meaning that if he hears he is getting traded to the Miami Dolphins he could just refuse to sign his tag to stop the trade.

With Clowney free to pick the team he wants to be traded to, it limits B.O.B’s options even further. No one has helped Clowney more in his career than Vrabel, or at least no one has used him better.

It stands to reason that Clowney would have the Titans on the list of teams he wants to play for. That and the fact that he gets to stay in a familiar division and instead of Jack Conklin and Taylor Lewan he gets to face the OTs of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans would be very attractive.

I don’t know if it will happen but if he has the “chutzpah” for it, a trade in the division makes a lot of sense and the Titans should have the edge on the Colts if they really want him.
