16-18. Defense notes

16. Defensive tackles

Who are the starting defensive tackles going to be tonight? By week 13 we are all hoping that the answer to that will be Jurrell Casey and Jeffery Simmons, but with neither available right now we are looking at a lot of guys who we have never seen before.

One starter will be Daquan Jones, but who is next to him? Austin Johnson has been his line partner before, but Johnson needs to step up and make plays this year or else you are going to have to find something else.

Is it time for Matt Dickerson to put his name in the hat to be the starter opposite Jones?

17. Rest nights for vets?

With guys like Wesley Woodyard and Cameron Wake logging tens of thousands of snaps combined over their careers, what are you going to see from those guys tonight? I am torn in guessing what Vrabel will do.

On one hand, he comes from the Bill Belichick school where starters play on special teams and no one is treated special. However, he has also been very careful with injuries this preseason.

Which tendency does he lean toward when the game starts?

18. How is Brent Urban used?

Urban is a “DE” if you are using the old school vocabulary, but in reality he is really a guy who should be playing 4i or 3-technique based off of what he does best.

You want him in the passing lane of the opposing QB and you want his length to be a significant advantage in his pass rush and run defense. To do that, I think you need to put him in the B-gap, but I could see him being pushed to playing 5-tech.
