Criticized at the time, the quiet addition of Cameron Wake looks like it is already going to pay dividends.

With the departure of Derrick Morgan and Brian Orakpo this offseason, the Tennessee Titans had a few questions at EDGE.

Sure, Harold Landry seems like a great bet to be one of the Titans best young players but he can’t play both positions at the same time.

While I think Sharif Finch can be an every down player at EDGE if his health allows, I can understand why starting two EDGEs with limited to no starter experience makes Mike Vrabel nervous.

That’s why this ended up being ranked so highly on the list. When you sit down and take age out of it and just look at what we have seen, this is the 3rd best move of the Tennessee Titans offseason.

Signing Cameron Wake to a 3 year/$23 million deal with 90% of the guaranteed money coming in year one.

The contract doesn’t make the player better or worse, but Jon Robinson gave himself an out just in case Wake hits some sort of wall in production. That is why the guaranteed money upfront is noteworthy.

As for the player, with this deal the Titans get a guy who has a lot of experience and will be huge in meeting rooms. That isn’t just talk, look at what he said about how he entered the league with a Hall of Famer in front of him on the depth chart:

"““I was blessed, at the beginning of my career, being under some pretty good guys who played in this league, like Jason Taylor, Joey Porter, and guys like that, guys I had an opportunity to learn from and ask questions, be a sponge around,” Wake said. “That wisdom they’d gained from all the years they’d played at the time I was coming in, I grabbed whatever nuggets I could.”"

With Harold Landry, Sharif Finch, Kamalei Correa, and D’Andre Walker all in their first contract, this is a crucial stage in their career. This is where they are really honing their game and developing into the players that they will be for the majority of their career.

More than a mentor, Wake can still do the most important objective EDGEs have: get to the quarterback. As one of the most efficient EDGEs in the league per snap, the Titans are getting a guy with a clear role.

In a pinch, they have a guy who can play 40-50 snaps in a game for you even if he is playing outside of his comfort zone. However, if they use him correctly they will get a proven pass rusher who can come in on specific downs and distances for about 25 snaps per game.

Either way, he is going to make a positive impact in several ways and to get a guy who can not only help you now, but help your young players develop, then you have to love what that move does for your entire team for the next five years.
