Tennessee Titans and Kenny Vaccaro still surprisingly haven’t reached deal

The Tennessee Titans still haven’t re-signed Kenny Vaccaro which seemed like a lock a few days ago.

Honestly, when the Tennessee Titans backed off on the trade talks for Antonio Brown I thought that signaled the start of Jon Robinson’s push to re-sign Kenny Vaccaro.

Jon Robinson made it a point at the combine to bring up Kenny Vaccaro as the Titans top priority in pre-free agency. With no other major impending free agents and with Vaccaro acting as a perfect fit in this defense I thought we were to the point where this deal would have already been made.

However, here we are an hour or so into the legal tampering period and there is no deal done. Now teams are free to reach out and make a deal with Vaccaro which could be a big deal if someone like the Houston Texans brought him in to upgrade on Tyrann Mathieu.

There is still plenty of time to make a deal, but maybe we ought to think about other options if they don’t come to a deal.

There are several blue chip targets out there if the Titans really feel like trying to make a splash.

Landon Collins is the big name and would fit in as a compliment to Kevin Byard. The big issue with that is that the Titans are on the precipice of signing Byard to a huge deal and that would probably mean that they would have more cap invested in safeties than nearly any other team in the NFL.

The other big name’s out there are Adrian Amos and Earl Thomas, both of which will be very expensive and I think they are worse fits than Collins.

Could Ha Ha Clinton-Dix be an option? He has always been a pretty good safety, but I think the numbers game got him in Green Bay and with his deal about to expire I think they saw the opportunity to get a potential top-100 pick and took it.

Along with HHCD, I think guys like Tre Boston and Lamarcus Joyner could be good options for the Titans in this slightly lower tier. While still expensive, I think they would be able to step in and make an impact like Vaccaro did.

Other than these six safeties, I think the Titans must be thinking that Dane Cruikshank is ready to step up either this season or next. Any other addition would be a stop-gap I think, and wouldn’t make a ton of sense to sign long term.

Ultimately I still have hope that the Titans can get something done with Kenny Vaccaro and I think he is an impact player on this defense that he took to like a fish takes to water. With this system being notorious for needing great safety play, this is all curious but the Titans camp really does get quiet this time of year as they operate in a really tight circle with very few leaks.

As lying season and agent season is in full swing, let’s sit back and watch and see what Jon Robinson does.
