Tennessee Titans offensive line won’t like these two stats

Tennessee Titans offensive line turning out to be a weakness.

Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin continue to look like one of the best offensive tackle combinations in the NFL and the Tennessee Titans are lucky to have two good players at a really valuable position.

However, the interior of the OL continues to look suspect and these offensive line stats are not impressive at all.

The Tennessee Titans are 20th in the league right now in sacks allowed. While they are already in the bottom 12, what makes it even worse is that they have only played seven games through eight weeks. Yikes.

A lot of people complained that Marcus Mariota was holding onto the ball too long (because it has become cool to blame QBs for holding the ball to long when they get sacked instead of actually looking at the tape).

But sure, I can get that. Maybe he is holding onto the ball too long on some plays, but is it really a consistent problem that is making the OL look bad? This stat would say no, the offensive line is continuous letting him down:

So essentially Mariota is getting the ball out as fast or faster than any QB in the NFL except for Drew Brees.

Logic would tell you that an offensive line struggling to pass block would probably have jobs more based on their ability to run block right?

Well, avert your eyes then because here comes the counter punch.

So more than half of the Tennessee Titans rushing yards are coming after contact, which really isn’t inspiring compared to a team like the 49ers who are are getting almost 65% of their yards before contact.

Right now the Titans aren’t blocking well on either front and it is a major issue that fans have to hope they addressed during the bye week.

I don’t know whether to blame it on coaching or the individuals, but I would say it is most likely a combination of both. Hopefully during the bye week they worked on emphasizing the strengths of the OL with the scheme, while the players worked on little changes to help them win more frequently.

As the season rounds out, we are going to figure out just how big of a need this is. With guys like Matt Paradis, Ramon Foster and Ben Garland set to hit free agency there are going to be some solid names looking for money and a job, both of which are there to be had in Tennessee.

This is one of the most underrated storylines coming out of the bye week and they are maybe the most important position group in terms of this team’s success. If they can come out and look like a top-10 unit then we could see an offense that can run the ball on early downs and keep the defense off balance.

If not, then this team will be lucky to land six wins and things are going to be a lot less fun this offseason as the Titans become the fluke team instead of a team that is progressing into a contender.
