How did the Tennessee Titans extremely small rookie class do this weekend?

This is going to be something I look at weekly, but you didn’t miss anything there was no Tennessee Titans rookie grades: Week 1. That is because only two rookies played, Dane Cruikshank on special teams and Sharif Finch played sparingly.

With more rookies getting snaps then last week, it felt like a good time to get this rolling.

So how did the rookies do this week?

Rashaan Evans: Incomplete

I’m just including Evans on the list this week because the Titans should use him more going forward. Evans only played one snap, but given the investment they made in him and his athletic ability he should be used in special packages sooner rather than later.

Harold Landry: A

Landry is a star in the making, his get off and bend are second to none. While he didn’t go against great competition this week, he dominated whoever he lined up against.

With a handful of hurries and quarterback hits in just 35 snaps, I found myself begging the Titans to put him on the field more frequently. This should do wonders for Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan who are getting older and are obviously better fresh.

Trying not to overreact after his first game, but so far he looks like the top-10 pick he should have been.

Dane Cruikshank: A

In a league where development is rarely actually achieved because of the rush to get on the field, Cruikshank has a real chance to sit, watch and develop while being a contributor on special teams.

As a gunner, he showed the ability to get off blocks and get behind the blockers to force the returner to make an immediate decision under pressure or get tackled. That is…when he is being pressed.

I’m obviously referring to the time the Titans saw the Texans trying to block a punt and leaving the gunners wide open. That resulted in a quick pass from Kevin Byard that ended in the Titans first touchdown of the game after a 66-yard catch and run.

I don’t know when he is going to be needed in the short or long term, but having a great athlete with good college production waiting in the wings and developing is a nice thing for the Titans to have.

Sharif Finch: C

Finch isn’t blowing anyone away right now, in fact I don’t think he has recorded a tackle yet. Still, he isn’t getting worked by the offensive linemen when he is in and for being the 5th EDGE on the depth chart he is doing fine while he waits to adjust to the NFL.
