Will weather have an effect on the Tennessee Titans today?

All reports are that it is supposed to rain on the Tennessee Titans and Miami Dolphins today for the season opener. The question is, what does that mean?

For all the preaching on execution, it is going to be difficult to play pristine football in sloppy conditions.

Imagine running on a wet field right now and then imagine you have to do it while cutting and/or blocking 300 lb. linemen. That is the situation today for Tennessee and Miami.

This shouldn’t be an advantage or disadvantage for either team specifically. Both teams have to play on the same field, so it isn’t an excuse for the Titans doing poorly. It should change how they attack the Dolphins though.

I think we all expected a 50/50 division of labor between Dion Lewis and Derrick Henry, but I think now that number should skew towards Henry for all the obvious reasons.

While historically Lewis is actually the better inside running back between the two, Henry has showed in preseason that he might actually be able to stick his nose in it and grind ahead for a handful of yards. In the past, Henry has been so focused on the home run plan that he has left yards on the field.

Now in an offense that builds off of every play with a counter run or play action pass, I think more discipline is going to be demanded of Henry.

While I still expect Lewis to get his touches, I think the simplest plan may be the best. A Miami Dolphins team that already struggles vs the run, now is missing Ndamukong Suh and should have trouble holding the middle of that line.

I would love to see them run some Iso and trap plays, but if they still go zone heavy that can be alright too. Henry’s size and strength should make it a problem for defenders to grab on to him in these wet conditions.

So while I would love to see an offense that makes Marcus Mariota look great with PA passes for chunk yardage and some QB runs, I don’t think that is the right call today.

Today sounds like a great day to slug it out in the trenches and make defenders tackle Henry for a while only to have them contend with Lewis and his ability to make people miss in the hole.

The Titans invested heavily in the RB position over the last few years with a 2nd round pick in Henry and some nice money for Lewis, so why not lean on that group today?
