Tennessee Titans face the most exciting week of preseason
By Will Lomas
This is an exciting weekend for the Tennessee Titans, but probably not why you think.
I am going to be honest, the week four preseason game is always boring, and that isn’t any different for the Tennessee Titans.
There are some fun things to watch and several story lines to keep track of, but honestly teams have made up their minds on about 52 of the 53 roster spots.
Sure a huge game from a bottom of the roster receiver or defensive back could change a team’s mind on who to keep with the last spot, but other than that it is basically just a free week to give your team some rest and some extra reps before Week 1.

So why is this so exciting? Well, because I expect there to be three or four new players on the team by this time on Monday.
The most obvious reason is because this is the time of year when teams cut down from 90 players to 53. So, there over 1,200 players cut after Thursday’s preseason action.
While the bulk of the roster will remain the same including the starters, this is a great time to take depth from another team and get it on your roster. For example, everyone should remember that starting right guard Josh Kline was a preseason waiver claim from the New England Patriots.

Recently guys like Briean Boddy-Calhoun and Kony Ealy, have been claimed off of the waiver wire. Those guys aren’t winning games for teams, but they have made each team better as a backup.
The Tennessee Titans have some need at defensive line, safety and I wouldn’t say no to a really solid slot receiver. Even though they aren’t high on the priority list, it will be interesting to see if they can land a guy or two.
Aside from claims, there is always the trade market. More than any other time of year (including the trade deadline) teams make moves for players in week four of the preseason.
Everything from small moves like conditional 7th rounders for guys like David King, to bigger moves like the Ryan Switzer trade from today:
This is where the bottom of NFL rosters really start to churn. If there has been a guy that Jon Robinson has liked this season, you can bet that he is making calls to see if he can land him. He is also receiving calls from teams looking to make deals themselves.
Right now the Titans are in the busiest/most exciting time of the preseason even though everything pins that praise on Week 3. This is most impactful week for teams trying to make one final push before the season, it will be interesting to keep an eye on what the Titans may do.
