Who has been the biggest camp surprise for the Tennessee Titans?

It is hard to figure out who is having a good camp and who is just getting propped up by propaganda. However for the Tennessee Titans I think the riser is pretty clear: Nick Williams.

Nick Williams is a player I had absolutely no idea about when he was signed by the Titans and I really didn’t know where he fit. For all the chirping about the Tennessee Titans WRs, I thought the pecking order was clear after the draft:

More from Titans News

1. Rishard Matthews

2. Corey Davis

3. Taywan Taylor

But, that really isn’t how this offense is build. Instead of maybe getting the three best wide receivers on the field, it is more about a field stretcher, a playmaker and a designated slot player (at least that is how I would classify it).

When the Titans decided to put Rishard Matthews on PUP, it made things a little more confusing. The list looks like this now:

Field stretcher: Taywan Taylor

Playmaker: Corey Davis

Slot guy:….who?

There is a real battle for that position, in fact I wrote about it last week in detail. Here is what I said about Williams:

"“I asked Travis May if he noticed who was getting the most reps in the slot and it actually wasn’t Burnett. It was Nick Williams, you guys know him right? In case you don’t, he is a 6th year WR who came into the NFL as an UDFA from UConn. He is connected to this offensive staff through Matt LaFleur who was around him in Washington in 2013 and in Atlanta in 2015……However if you are looking at a wildcard, Nick Williams is kind of an undersized Wes Welker type player and he is getting a lot of reps and chances to impress.”"

And that is exactly what he did. In limited snaps last week, he caught a 30+ yard pass on 3rd down with Marcus Mariota and the first team offense to really get the drive going. He also fielded a punt and made a tackle on special teams.

If you are trying to earn a spot on the roster, and maybe even real reps when the season comes around then this is about as well as you could have hoped game one would go.

Going from not even making my top-8 WRs, to potentially earning himself a role as a designated special teamer and slot receiver is a huge jump. Let’s see if he can keep it up and add more substance to this hype.
