What happened on the first day back for the Tennessee Titans offense?

It is back. The Tennessee Titans are back to playing football for the rest of 2018 and beyond.

So, with so much to talk about and so much to cover let’s dive into some quick news and notes on the first day of practice.

Quarterbacks:

-Not much to talk about here, other than Marcus Mariota looked good in redzone period which is to be expected. The other thing I would note is that there was a lot of read option in today’s practice from reports.

Not surprising, but most attention was focused elsewhere.

Running backs:

-The Titans told us a lot of what they thought about the running backs today whether they meant  to or not. Reports are that Derrick Henry was the lead back and that all of his snaps came with Marcus Mariota.

This doesn’t meant that the Titans don’t view Lewis as a co-starter, but it does tell us that they don’t view him as a RB1 which was an idea that held some water up until now.

-The Akrum Wadley train may need to slow down. While he was a great UDFA signing and I think he has great potential as a RB3, it looks like right now David Fluellen is the RB3 right now by a solid margin.

Wide Receivers:

-Maybe the biggest news of the day happened at the wide receiver position. Rishard Matthews was out, though it doesn’t seem like there should be any serious concern. He did this some last year where he would miss time in the preseason and for the most part it never really mattered.

-Corey Davis had a bunch of eyes on him because with Rishard Matthews out the drop off from WR1 to WR2 is a large gap. From what I can tell his day was peaks and valleys, which compared the other receivers was a great day.

His day was highlighted by a huge catch in the endzone with Adoree Jackson in great coverage by all reports. That is what you should be wanting to see from the second year talent, now time for more consistency.

-Taywan Taylor had an interesting day, not because of what he did necessarily but because it was him that took over the WR2 spot on the outside not Tajae Sharpe. This is an interesting note from Mike Herndon:

Tight ends:

-I didn’t hear his name much during practice, but for whatever reason it seemed like all everyone wanted to talk about after the practice was how great Jonnu Smith is. That is great, but it just seemingly came out of nowhere.

People were raving, saying everything from he is DWIT (Delanie Walker in Training) to the idea that he is in for a big year with the Titans. This is something I will be watching closely.

-Delanie Walker is great. Just a reminder.

Offensive line:

-The biggest news was that it was Kevin Pamphile and Dennis Kelly at the offensive tackle positions in team drills today. When it was individuals, it was Lewan at LT and a rotation of those two at right tackle.

-The interior remains the same as last year: Spain-Jones-Kline at G/C/C. That is what I would hope right now anyway, I think that is a really solid unit.

-The last big note is that Taylor Lewan and the new offensive line coach had a rocky start to their relationship. Lewan embellished a rep on scout team defense (which he probably shouldn’t be doing during camp when there are a dozen OL available) and the coach didn’t like it.

They had a long talk afterwords, and I don’t think this will turn into anything but it is worth noting.
