Should the Tennessee Titans change Adoree Jackson to wide receiver?

The Tennessee Titans have an interesting option on the table.

The Tennessee Titans may have the most versatile player in the NFL in Adoree Jackson.

As a rookie, Adoree Jackson not only led his class in snaps, he was second among all players in the NFL. He played CB, KR, RB, WR, and PR.

To be honest, he is actually good at every one of them and he looked every bit like a first round CB despite having to do more than any other rookie in the NFL.

So it isn’t surprising to see Bleacher Report float the idea that Adoree Jackson could move to offense full time:

"“So why change what’s already working?Right now, the Titans need a playmaker on offense far more than defense, and Jackson could create just as much of an impact at wide receiver as cornerback. Corey Davis is the only receiver on the roster with the potential to create chunk plays. Jackson is dynamic with the ball in his hands and can line up out wide, in the slot or even in the backfield.”"

Brent Sobleski makes a lot of good points. The Titans do need another impact WR that can be explosive and make chunk plays. Maybe that is Taywan Taylor and maybe it isn’t, but either way someone needs to step up at WR in 2018 if the Titans are going to be a top-10 offense in the NFL.

Even going deeper, you could argue that the Titans are one of the few teams in the NFL with enough CB depth to even consider making that kind of move.

  • If this move took place, Logan Ryan and Malcolm Butler would be the starting CB tandem just like they were a few years ago when they won a Super Bowl (that in fact ended with a Butler game clinching INT if I remember correctly).

Behind them, LeShaun Sims could come in as the third CB and play the boundary, pushing one of them inside to cover the slot depending on the matchup. Sims is having a great camp by all reports, and he is probably a starting caliber CB in the NFL.

Having said all that, there is no way Adoree gets close to being moved to WR. It took a phenomenal year by Marshon Lattimore to overshadow what Jackson did last year, which was consistently progress and become a good starting CB in the NFL.

As Sobleski cites in his article, no other rookie had more pass breakups than Adoree Jackson not even Lattimore.

What Jackson did last year is eerily similar to what Kevin Byard did as a rookie. So many times both the rookies were close to getting an interception, but for whatever reason the ball didn’t fall their way. Whether it was a technique issue or maybe just a confidence thing early, they didn’t quiet get the turnovers.

Fast forward to a year later and Byard led the NFL in interceptions and had one of the biggest moments in recent Titans history when he picked off Blake Bortles to basically end the game and send Tennessee to the playoffs.

I’m not saying that Adoree Jackson will lead the NFL in interceptions, but pass breakups usually turn into interceptions as defensive backs develop and it wouldn’t surprise me to see Jackson come out of the season with three or four turnovers.

So, while on the surface the idea makes sense the Titans would never make that move for more than a few plays every game.
