The Tennessee Titans may have one of the best defensive line coaches in the NFL.

The crowning jewel of the Tennessee Titans new coaching hires were Matt LaFleur and Dean Pees, and for good reason. However the positional coaches deserve some love too.

When I started out with the concept of this article, I thought for sure I was going to talk about Kerry Coombs.

The veteran DB coach is responsible for contributors on more NFL squads than nearly anyone, and not just depth players either. During his time at Ohio State he averaged more than one DB a year who ended up in the first round of the next draft.

This includes the best young CB in the NFL in Marshon Lattimore, who seemingly re-defined how good a rookie DB can be.

While Coombs is a great option to write an article on (and something I will probably do in the future) he isn’t the coach I want to talk about today.

However, while pouring over the info something really stood out Terrell Williams did a great job making great players even better.

In Miami, he was around Ndamukong Suh for three seasons. In that time, PFF graded those as his 1st, 2nd, and 4th best seasons with him getting better every year.

Not only was Suh’s play improved, but he helped refine the EDGE players too. Cameron Wake had 29 sacks in 39 games with Williams and Olivier Vernon ended up having the season that propelled him to a huge contract in New York under him.

While you wouldn’t know it from the Dolphins win-loss record or their team defensive stats, they had one of the best defensive lines in the NFL and all of it was while Williams was at the helm.

And sure, he had great players to work with, but how many times have we seen bad coaches take over good units and completely waste talent? It seems to happen every year, but the Titans new defensive line coach took all that potential and turned it into one of the best units in football.

This is great news for Jurrell Casey, Harold Landry, Derrick Morgan, and Brian Orakpo who will all probably be on the defensive line at different times in the Titans 4-down look.

Who knows, maybe he can even get something out of Kevin Dodd and the 4th EDGE spot will resolve itself.

Either way, Williams has been lost in the Coombs hype and we need to realize that Titans have great coaches at every level of that defense. That side of the ball has the sneaky potential to be a top-5 unit in the NFL next year if things break right and this may be the quiet before the storm.
