The Tennessee Titans need for a 5th receiver was always overstated.

I understand that before the draft that some people wanted the Tennessee Titans to forgo need and go after a shiny new wide receiver. I think in retrospect we can say now that was a stupid idea.

We can say that for a lot of reasons. First and foremost because this team had very few real “holes” and a depth WR over impact positions like EDGE and LB just never made sense.

Maybe more importantly, we can say that because Matt LaFleur doesn’t need the 5th WR to play a ton of snaps. Look at the number of snaps, and percentage of snaps that the top-5 played last year for the Los Angeles Rams.

More from Titans Draft

Here are the snap totals for the LA Rams top 5 WRs last year:

-Watkins 774/1031 (75%)

-Cooper Kupp 736/1031  (73%)

-Robert Woods 645/1031 (63%)

-Josh Reynolds 280/1031 (27%)

-Pharoh Cooper 205/1031 (20%)

So if that translates, then going into the draft you are planning on asking Michael Campanaro to play 205 snaps? That isn’t insane, considering last year he played more than 250 snaps.

It just isn’t that big of a need. But I will say this, if the Titans would have somehow gotten a 7th round pick in this draft through a trade I think they could have very easily used it on Deontay Burnett.

If you don’t know who that is, he is the USC WR that the Tennessee Titans signed as an UDFA. Yet another steal for Jon Robinson, Burnett was considered a 4th round pick by Optimum Scouting and a 6th round pick by Dane Bruglar.

There is an UDFA that looks like someone with a high chance to make this roster considering his talent the the Titans need for a cheap, young depth WR for the next few years.

I know it makes sense to pair a great WR with Marcus Mariota and this new offense, but they did that last year in Corey Davis. Once he is healthy and functioning in this offense, everything will look and feel completely different.

For right now though, be happy that WR5 isn’t a huge position in any offense, even this one. Also, if there is a need for one, the Titans have a solid veteran and a rookie with upside there to man the position.

Trust Jon Robinson.
