How the Tennessee Titans should value positions in the offseason.

One of the biggest questions that people have during this time is how do you value players at different positions.

For example, it a top-end guard worth more than a top-end defensive tackle? Is a great cornerback more valuable than a great pass rusher?

Well, the NFL has already decided that. How? They did it by deciding which players get the most money.

It isn’t a hard thing to figure out, but people overthink it all the time. The NFL will tell you who they believe the most important positions are because they will allocate the most resources to get those players.

You can’t use draft pick history to figure that out because different teams have different picks both in draft order and in frequency. The only place where everything is equal is in League-mandated salary caps.

The NFL has a hard cap, meaning that all teams have the same amount of money to spend and no one can enter the league year above that set number.

Alright, now that we know that we have to try to figure out how you deal with a team valuing positions that are on the field more than others. For example there is only one QB on the field at any time where there are two offensive tackles.

The best way you can negate this is by just talking about top end talent. How much is the best QB worth? How about the best CB? Etc.

Luckily there is a mechanism in place for that: the franchise tag.

The rumored franchise tag numbers are out now, so that means that we have our rankings. So, here is what the number look like:

So that means the rankings go like this once you sort by value:

1. QB

2. DE

3. WR

4. CB

5. LB

6. OL

7. DT

8. RB

9. S

10. TE

11. K

-OT is undervalued and C/G is over valued because they are all lumped together as one position.

-Likewise, ILB is overvalued because it is getting lumped in with EDGE players like Justin Houston and Von Miller as “LB”.

-Again, same thing but with 5-techs being overvalued as “DEs”

That kind of stuff needs to be addressed in the future, but for now this is the best ranking system we have when we are trying to figure out if certain players are worth high draft picks.

This system tells us that an above average safety may not be worth as much as an above average running back. So if you think Minkah Fitzpatrick is worth more than Saquon Barkley purely because of positional value then the league would argue with you.
