Tennessee Titans best plan is to go with 3 WR formations

A simple change the Tennessee Titans need to make.

It isn’t a big change, but there is a personnel decision that I would make today that I don’t think the Tennessee Titans will.

I don’t talk a lot about formations and schemes on here, but if you listen to the Titan Sized podcast you know that I have some ideas on what Tennessee should do tonight.

First and foremost is they have to take any sort of control out of Terry Robiskie’s hands. This is a day where Mike Mularkey and Marcus Mariota are the only ones making the play calls.

If that happens, then I would love for them to go into more 3 WR sets and I will explain why.

First and foremost, the Titans don’t have a second tight end who is a real threat. Sure Jonnu Smith shows flashes, but he isn’t really a great TE2 right now.

Delanie Walker has to be on the field in some regard, so this won’t change his role at all. Your base package would be Walker on the line, Corey Davis, Rishard Matthews and Eric Decker at wide receiver.

Then I would make sure that Davis and Matthews were on the numbers, far away from the offensive line, with Decker splitting the distance.

Now, you have to understand that this formation isn’t to highlight any of the WRs. No, it is to spread out the defense so that you can’t have an 8-man box vs Marcus Mariota and Derrick Henry.

This forces the Patriots into a zone defense for the majority of the game if they want to play with more guys in the box. Even then it is really risky if you have the right play call because someone should have a lot of space to work with.

You want to get them in a position where they are communicating a lot with motions and shifts out of this group, motioning from bunch sets, to putting a guy like Decker in the backfield, to shifting Walker out to give a twins look, etc.

The goal is to cause confusion in coverage so that when you go hurry up you can can success with the run or the pass.

Ultimately this game will be decided by how successful and consistent the running game can be. That paired with the defenses success vs one of the best QBs of all time will decide this game.

This change gives the Titans a lot of options and it keeps the Patriots from taking away the run, which is their weakness. If Tennessee just stays bunched up then everyone can load the box without any real consequence.

A smart OC/offensive HC would make this change and I know Mariota would make this change, given he has the authority to do that. This will be a great test to see how flexible Tennessee is.
