Are the Tennessee Titans heading into a rare situation.

The cries to fire Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Mularkey have been loud and frequent over the past couple of weeks. The Titans are running headlong into a really rare situation that should mean movement by the front office.

The term “lame duck” is thrown around a lot and in case you don’t know, all it means is that a player or coach is in the last year of their contract.

As Chad Forbes noted on Twitter, Mike Mularkey just so happens to be heading into that lame duck year:

Guys like Ron Rivera and Pete Carroll are probably just waiting to get the most leverage they can given how well they have preformed at different times over the last few years.

However, guys like Bill O’Brien, Todd Bowles, John Fox, and Mike Mularkey are guys that are already being talked  about as potential firings this season.

Coaches and teams uneasy going into these lame duck years, it isn’t crazy to see extensions or firings come out of seemingly nowhere.

No matter what I think that Mike Mularkey has something happen to him this offseason. Will he be extended (hopefully conditional on getting a new OC in the building)? Will he be fired? Surely a GM like Jon Robinson who thinks years ahead, won’t let a guy stick around with that kind of leverage right?

A month ago the Titans were coasting to a playoff spot and it looked like a boring offseason ahead. However, HUGE lapses in judgement and play calling have led to everyone questioning the coaching staff more than when they were winning ugly.

Keep an eye on this situation as it develops and hope for the best for the Tennessee Titans franchise as they enter a critical time in Marcus Mariota’s development.
