Some statistical proof about the Tennessee Titans biggest issue.

It isn’t a secret that the Tennessee Titans have struggled defensively at times this season. While there isn’t much they can do to address that now, it makes it clear that there is a big need this offseason.

Heading into the season I would have argued with you that cornerback and safety were big issues of need and behind them would have been pass rusher.

Since that time fans have seen the emergence of Adoree Jackson and Logan Ryan as talented CBs and Kevin Byard has become a star (not that he is who I would have replaced).

The issue is that no one has stepped up as an EDGE player. Derrick Morgan is on pace for 10 sacks which is great, but Brian Orakpo and Erik Walden are on pace to combine for just 5 sacks.

When your top three EDGE players are on track to get just 15 sacks in a year, that is bad news. PFF clarified it today with this stat where they identified EDGE as the Titans biggest draft need:

“With the seventh-lowest pressure rate in the NFL at 31 percent, Tennessee can use another edge rusher as Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan get up there in age. Both players are still solid, but an influx of youth is needed at the position. 2016 second-round pick Kevin Dodd has only 210 snaps to his name, so look for Tennessee to address their edge rusher situation early in the 2018 draft.”

So their stats are telling them that despite popular belief the Titans are missing both pressure and sacks. That is a huge issue.

In a healthy crop of pass rushers, the Titans have no excuse not to get one high in the draft or to try to grab a guy like DeMarcus Lawrence or Ziggy Ansah. If not one of those guys, maybe a swing at a guy like Alex Okafor on a short deal or someone like Julius Peppers/Dwight Freeney on a bridge deal if he still wants to play.

No matter what this has to be the position they attack like OT in 2016 or CB in 2017. A draft pick AND a free agent signing/trade seems like a solid projection right now.
