How the Tennessee Titans can improve at quarterback.

You can’t argue with Marcus Mariota being the Tennessee Titans franchise quarterback. Sorry, at this point if you don’t see it you either can’t or aren’t looking.

He is growing up in front of our eyes, and it isn’t just Tennessee fans noticing.

More from Titans Free Agency

Aside from being on the top-100 on NFL.com and being praised from every media outlet, Justis Mosqueda has a ton of praise from him. Here he pointed out why he is great

Not only that, but look at what he said after the addition of Eric Decker last night.

Marcus Mariota is going to be great, what the Tennessee Titans need is a top-end back up.

If the Tennessee Titans franchise QB has one flaw, it is that he has struggled with some injury issues. At some point Mike Mularkey may want to take him out in the middle of the season if he has a bump or a bruise, if the Titans can turn into a top-end team.

Think about it like how the Pittsburgh Steelers play Big Ben. When he gets a bruise, they keep him out for a little bit so that he can be ready for their playoff run. Same thing with Marcus Mariota.

But to do that, they need a guy who can come in and run the offense when Mariota is resting. I don’t really think that they can settle for Matt Cassel.

While I do think that Cassel is here to stay for 2017, they need someone fro 2018. Here are two options that I see making a lot of sense.

Keep: Alex Tanney

If you want to see the Alex Tanney love, look not further than Crissy Froyd who has been on his bandwagon the whole time.

I think Tanney is a good player and he put up a nice stat line against the Indianapolis Colts in his lone NFL game. As impressive as a 1 TD/O INT performance is, he did finish with just 99 yards so he wasn’t exactly a revelation.

If Tanney is developing behind the scenes and they see him as a long term starter, he needs to make a big splash in training camp and the preseason. If he can’t take the job from Matt Cassel in his third year maybe he isn’t the answer.

  • Sign: Chase Daniel

Chase Daniel is sort of like a maxed out version of Alex Tanney. He is accurate, smart and he always seems to be ready to step in and start a game or to play a snap if the QB has something going on.

He isn’t going to dominate opponents, but in the last three years the only game where he has been the starting quarterback he won.

When you look for a player to back up Marcus Mariota, you have to find someone who fits a few parameters:

    1. Cheap

    2. Minimal wear and tear

    3. Capable starter

    4. Comfortable in a run first system (AKA isn’t a gunslinger)

    5. Someone who is looking for wins and is competitive.

After earning a lot of money to be a backup QB around the league, Daniel should check off numbers 1 and 5. His limited but successful time as a spot starter should knock out numbers 2 and 3. And his time with Andy Reid in KC should round out the group.

He isn’t a huge name, but that isn’t what the Titans need. Daniel could come in and be a long term backup for them and give them a lot of time to focus mid round picks and resources on other places.
