David Harris is the veteran linebacker the Titans have been longing for

Unlike the last couple years in Tennessee, it is tough to find a hole on the Titans roster. Of course the cornerback position is one that needs improvement, but the inside linebacker position also could use a little help.

At this point we are really nitpicking to find an area of need on the Tennessee Titans roster, but that is the fun about the offseason. Most fans probably just want the season to start tomorrow and not worry about if the Titans are going to make another move. What we like to do here as writers is role play as NFL general managers from time to time. Therefore, when an interesting talent hits the market it is our duty to see if that player fits what the Titans are trying to do. As is, the Titans linebacking corps is fine and would probably put together a nice season. The only thing they could really use is a veteran to rotate in and out. That veteran hit the market recently and his name is David Harris.

Harris is exactly what you want from your inside linebacker. He has been consistent his whole career. That career was played with the New York Jets, therefore it is tough to be consistent on a team that is inconsistent. Harris does not have the star power that fans may be looking for in a linebacker, but he is the perfect option for Dick LeBeau’s defense. As a 3-4 inside linebacker, Harris hovers around 65 tackles each year. He also plays every game possible. In 10 seasons in the NFL, Harris has played in 16 games seven times in his career.

Where does he fit?

Although Wesley Woodyard and Avery Williamson are entrenched as starters, they will need a rest from time to time. That is where David Harris would fit. Sure, the Titans have rookie Jayon Brown who will make some noise in the middle, but Harris would bring consistency next to the young rookie. The other linebackers on the roster are uninspiring options. Last season, Harris compiled 62 tackles in 15 games with the Jets. As a third option in the Titans defense, two-thirds of that would be acceptable.

The only real barrier here is money. Harris may not have that many suitors due to his age of 33 years old. If that is the case and he wants to continue his career, Tennessee may be in a position to add the veteran on the cheap.

The only reason to sign Harris is if it is cost effective. There is no need to put the Titans in financial strain for an older player. At the end of the day, Harris probably has a lot of football left in the tank. Why not bring him to Nashville to see how much is left? Jon Robinson is looking at all the options to improve the roster and Harris should be one of those. At this point we can just wait and see. Football cannot come soon enough; OTAs just are not as exciting as the season is.
