The Tennessee Titans need to keep this offensive line together.

Quinton Spain is simultaneously in the best and worst spot of any of the Tennessee Titans free agents.

There is no denying that the left side of the offensive line has been a strength since Spain and Taylor Lewan teamed up there in late 2015.

Not only has this allowed the team to protect Marcus Mariota, but clearly it (along with the additions of Jack Conklin, Ben Jones and Josh Kline) has improved the running game as well.

On the other hand, it is easy to wipe away his achievements by calling him the third or fourth (depending on how much you like Ben Jones) best lineman on the Titans offensive line.

With the team needing to pay Taylor Lewan soon, there are really one of two ways this could go in my mind.

The early extension

Do this. Don’t let it get pass this point Tennessee Titans.

In this scenario, the Titans see that they have a very nice offensive line and are trying to keep it together for as long as they can.

With Lewan at least under contract through 2018, they can focus on front loaded contracts for their few impending free agent starters. Quinton Spain would be first in line to me.

In this scenario, I would love for the Titans to offer Spain something like a 5 year, $37 million deal, with $15 million guaranteed.

That is a lot of money for a guard, but if the Titans got the bulk of the guaranteed money on the books for 2017 where they have a ton of money just sitting around, it wouldn’t be bad at all.

  • The top guards in the NFL are all making around $10 million per year, and while I like Quinton Spain I think he is more in that next tier.

This would be a smart move that keeps Spain in a city that loves him with plenty of support around him. It also allows him a future where he gets to play on a team loaded with offensive talent.

    The boom or bust

This is what neither team should want. Free agent guards rarely move and go to schemes that fit them better.

However, if this is what Quinton Spain wants he could hold out and roll the dice on himself this year. I think that is risky for a few reasons.

Maybe the biggest of those reasons is that no team will value him like his current one. He is a beloved part of the OL and he is the second longest tenured player on that line as hard as it is to believe.

If he hits free agency and gets an Andy Levitre-like payday, will that really do anything for him? If he gets an empty contract that diminishes his value long term and he goes to a team he doesn’t fit, who does that help?

I hope this isn’t what happens because while it might make him a few more million per year, none of that matters if he is cut and never sees the end of that contract.
