Were there any major missteps for Jon Robinson in year one?

If you are trying to pick holes in Jon Robinson’s first two offseasons with the Tennessee Titans, good luck.

Not only did Robinson make huge strides increasing the protection of Marcus Mariota, but the skill positions have been completely remade and upgraded. On offense, the Tennessee Titans have quietly assembled a top-10 unit.

Defensively, the Titans have players like Logan Ryan, Jurrell Casey, Derrick Morgan, Brian Orakpo, Kevin Byard, and Adoree Jackson who are all capable of making game changing plays consistently.

Special teams has also received a massive boost in every phase. There really hasn’t been a stone left un-turned in his first two offseasons.

So, imagine my surprise when I saw a Tennessee Titans player (barely) on OTC’s top-30 worst signings of 2016.

Who was it? Al Woods. Here is the post:

As far as bad contracts go, this wasn’t too terrible. The Titans paid him $4 million last year and while he did miss four games I don’t know what else they really expected from him last season. Cutting him likely had more to do with a $1.25 million guarantee potentially kicking in. There may be no stingier team with money in the NFL than the Titans and this would have impacted their roster flexibility so it was one and done for Mr. Woods who landed with the Colts this offseason.”

Like I said, if you are trying to find holes in Jon Robinson’s first year, good luck. Even this is a minor issue and like the comment said, even for a bad contract that wasn’t terrible.

That got me thinking, what other terrible contracts were made in the AFC South last year?

I’m not going to put the exact notes for every team, but here are the players and where they were ranked. Click the link above to find the full explanations.

    Indianapolis Colts

    1. Dwayne Allen, Colts- 4 years, $29.4 million

    14. Patrick Robinson, Colts- 3 years, $14 million

    Houston Texans

    2. Brock Osweiler, Texans- 4 years, $72 million

    Jacksonville Jaguars

    8. Allen Hurns, Jaguars- 4 years, $40 million

    10. Chris Ivory, Jaguars- 5 years, $32 million

    19. Marcedes Lewis, Jaguars- 3 years, $12 million

Including the Tennessee Titans, that makes 7 bad contracts in the bottom 30. That is a pretty crazy percentage (23%) for just four teams.

Still, if the Titans worst commitment last year was to a nose tackle that they used as a stop gap and got rid of for cheap, I am fine with that.

It isn’t like they had a crippling commitment to a bad quarterback that cost them a 2nd round pick, or they had to take peanuts for a tight end they could never figure out how to use.
