What Jonnu Smith is for the Tennessee Titans
By Will Lomas
Are we all miscasting Jonnu Smith as a pure tight end, do the Tennessee Titans have more in store?
The Tennessee Titans are not drafting tight ends because they can play in the slot. In fact, more than most other teams in the league, the Tennessee Titans want to rely on their tight ends to block.
However, the Tennessee Titans do want their tight ends to have positional versatility. They have certainly gotten that in Jonnu Smith according to PFF’s tweet on him:
The Tennessee Titans are not going to be a double tight end team this year, but I do expect them to trot out two “tight end” sized bodies all the time.

Some of what I have heard is that the Titans may look at using him some in a full back/move tight end role. That would mean that he would be on the field with Delanie Walker and Taywan Taylor at the same time.
Combine those three with Corey Davis/Rishard Matthews and Demarco Murray/Derrick Henry you have a versatile offensive package that can be easily used to create mismatches.
That graphic above shows that not only can Jonnu Smith line up on the line, he can play in the slot and has the athletic ability to line up in the backfield and make plays.

I would imagine that if the Titans aren’t in love with Jalston Fowler this year, they could look to move him to open up a spot on someone like Smith who can do more for you in the passing game.
All in all, it is hard to imagine a more upgraded unit over the last two years, than Marcus Mariota’s passing offense. He added an All-Pro right tackle, a nice veteran center, a quality right guard, four new starting wide receivers, two new running backs, and now a versatile move-type tight end.
