If it is optional, then we cannot get mad if someone does not attend.

Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry missed the first day of Organized Team Activities. This magically has become a story across the Titans nation. At the end of the day, we have to ask ourselves: just how important is an optional organized team activity? The answer is not that important at all. Players across the NFL choose to continue their workout regimens at home instead of going back to their teams in the middle of April.

Granted, the team would love if all of their players came to OTAs. This would be great to make sure that the fitness of each player has not dwindled in the off season. Also, it helps the new players to meet the new players and start to build a rapport. Other than that it is just another way to keep tabs on the players.

If teams trust their employees, they would not be worried at all about them not attending optional organized team activities. They know exactly how the players are progressing in terms of fitness and rehabilitation. The teams also are in contact with players about new schemes and ideas for the next season as well. Players have the choice of what they feel is best for them and that is the most important thing to realize.

Imagine you were a football player enjoying your off season and were told you could go back to your team to work out and do some drills. That probably does not sound that appealing to players enjoying their time with their families. The football season is long and grueling. Football players are away from their families for a long period of time and they also are away from their homes. Why would they want to workout in a different place if it does not fit in with their off season plan. OTA’s definitely have their place in football and are great for most players and teams. Sometimes they are not ideal for the players though.

Let’s not make a big deal about Derrick Henry missing OTA’s. I am sure teams would love to make them mandatory. That will not happen though until their is a new collective bargaining agreement. For now OTA’s will stay the way they are and we as fans just have to live with who shows up and who does not.
