A Rich Cimini report that should interest the Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans sit in the advantageous situation of having four picks in the first three rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft.
They also benefit from having Jon Robinson, a General Manager who loves to trade for any assets he believes are being undervalued. This sets up perfectly for several draft day trades.
Look at this report on ESPN where Rich Cimini describes a situation where he could see Pro Bowl 3-4 defensive lineman, Sheldon Richardson sent in a package to a team during the 2017 NFL Draft in exchange for the chance to draft a potential starting quarterback that slips down the board on draft day.
“With so many needs, the Jets are looking to accumulate draft picks, not trade them away. That’s where Richardson comes into play. Instead of dealing the third-rounder, the Jets could trade their second-round pick and Richardson for the 24th pick.”

He referenced the “point system” that is public knowledge at this point where he believes Richardson and a 2nd round pick should be roughly worth the 24th pick.
That math boils down to evaluating Sheldon Richardson as worth a mid 3rd round pick.
So let’s say that math holds up but the Tennessee Titans are willing to do that deal with the 18th overall pick. That would mean that the Tennessee Titans evaluate Richardson as a mid second round pick.
You might think that is too high, but think about last year’s draft. Robinson really doesn’t do anything without a clear idea in his head of where the player is valued in this system.

FanSided
Knowing those two things, remember that the Tennessee Titans spent a mid-second round pick on Austin Johnson. So clearly they believe that defensive linemen are important to this scheme.
I wonder if they would evaluate Richardson as a 5-tech and consider moving Austin Johnson back to nose tackle where he played a lot in college. That way you get the best of both worlds.
So, just for the argument of value let’s say that this is how the trade shakes out:
New York Jets get: 18th overall (Patrick Mahomes QB, TTU)
Tennessee Titans get: Sheldon Richardson DE, 39th overall pick (2nd round) and 107th overall pick (3rd round comp pick).
Let’s run through a quick mock draft where the Tennessee Titans can still make some moves down from 5 (which they almost certainly will).
Tennessee Titans trade 5th overall pick (Leonard Fournette) to Cleveland Browns for the 12th, 33rd, and 52nd overall pick.
So after a Jon Robinson trade like he made for DeMarco Murray, he makes a trade like he did with Jared Goff where he stockpiles picks so a team can draft someone that they believe can be the foundation of their offense.
Here is how it all shakes out:
12: O.J. Howard TE, Alabama
33. Zay Jones WR, East Carolina
39. Raekwon McMillan LB, Ohio State
52. Tim Williams EDGE, Alabama
83. Cam Sutton CB, Tennessee
100. Pat Elflein G/C, Ohio State
107. George Kittle TE, Iowa
Here is how the whole draft broke down on Fanspeak.
So Jon Robinson gets a lot done in this draft. He gets:
-A stud 5-tech
-Two talented tight ends who can play immediately in different roles
-A starting, rangy ILB
-A speed rusher with 9+ sack potential from day one
-A cornerback that they should love from a fit and production standpoint
-A flexible guard/center that could potentially start from day 1 if Josh Kline isn’t exactly what they want

Now, is this realistic? No, probably not however the Cleveland Browns have more picks than they know what to do with and they could do worse than ending up with Myles Garrett and Leonard Fournette.
The New York Jets have an expiring asset that they might as well try to leverage into a quarterback they like. The GM and HC in New York aren’t just going to lose out and get fired because that is what is best for the franchise. They want to make their money and save their jobs.
Also, I didn’t think Robinson would steal Demarco Murray or get a blockbuster trade for a bad QB last year either so anything is possible with “Trader Jon”.
If the Tennessee Titans get half of this done they should be excited and they would be poised for a major upgrade.
