What is next for the Tennessee Titans?

Free agency has started, and to many people’s disappointment the Tennessee Titans didn’t sign any huge names in the opening hours.

Look, I get it. I wanted the Tennessee Titans to sign everyone, get great deals and have no issues, but that isn’t how the NFL works. Tennessee isn’t one elite player away from a Super Bowl and even if they were a guy of that caliber wasn’t in this free agent class anyway.

However, after the smoke cleared the Tennessee Titans got their starters at strong safety (Johnathan Cyprien) and at one of the cornerback spots (Logan Ryan) both of which will be 27 or younger during the 2017 NFL Season.

They also have three top-end special teams players in Brynden Trawick, Daren Bates and Eric Weems.

Finally, they brought back fan favorite Karl Klug and versatile linebacker Nate Palmer.

Where do they go from here?

What holes can the Tennessee Titans patch now? With some of the top end draft setting the market for the positions, the Titans can really figure out which players fit in their price range. Combining that information with what talent is left on the market, the Titans can start finding players to target hard.

Here are the positions of needs and some quick names that could be attractive.

  • Wide receiver

Terrelle Pryor: A stud in 2016 that has basically no production at wide receiver outside of last year. He fits the Jon Robinson model of age, upside and blocking ability. However, he doesn’t have a huge body of work which will make it hard for Robinson to throw money at him.

Brandin Cooks: A trade candidate that the Tennessee Titans have a standing offer for. Rumors are that the New Orleans Saints will make a decision today about where they are sending Cooks.

If you see the Titans get really involved with Pryor then that may be a hint that they are after Cooks. If not, maybe they believe they can get Cooks for a reasonable price.

    Nose tackle

Al Woods has been cut, and with as much as they may like Austin Johnson they were clearly in the market for a true NT for the last two years. With Snacks Harrison in 2016 and with Brandon Williams this year, it seems pretty clear they want a dominant space eater.

Dontari Poe:  He fits what they seem to be looking for, and is actually probably a better pass rusher than any other true nose tackle in the NFL. However, there seem to be concerns about his back and he may be going somewhere (Atlanta) on a one year prove it deal.

Johnathan Hankins: This is my pick for nose tackle and has been for a few months now. He should be cheaper than the other two big name guys in this class and he is every bit as talented. At 25 years old, he seems like a perfect fit for the Tennessee Titans.

    EDGE

Connor Barwin: An older player who was released from the Philadelphia Eagles. He was dominant in the 3-4 as a pass rusher but never fit into the 4-3. The Tennessee Titans should make a strong rusher and find someone who can get a sack besides Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan.

    Tight End

Jacob Tamme: He is a year younger than Anthony Fasano and he is a nice blocker. He would be a cheap TE2 that could be a TE3 if the Tennessee Titans spend a draft pick on a tight end.

    Linebacker

Dont’a Hightower: A great linebacker who is physical and a very quality blitzer. One of the rare free agents that is being underhyped right now and who could make a really big impact for the Tennessee Titans.
