Free agency has officially begun, the rumors are flying, and the Titans have already made a few moves that need to be noted.
NFL free agency officially began Thursday at 4 p.m. ET. Here’s the most up-to-date news and rumors that have been going around lately in regards to the Tennessee Titans.
Logan Ryan
It took until nearly the wee ours of the night, but the Titans made a splash late into the first day of free agency by inking Ryan. A Jon Robinson favorite (he drafted him in New England), Ryan isn’t quite a shutdown cornerback, but he’s a hell of a cover guy. Ryan immediately provides a consistent cornerback option for Dick LeBeau. With Cyprien and Ryan in tow, the revamping of the Titans secondary is in full swing.
Brandon Williams
UPDATE: Williams has re-signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Dontari Poe and Johnathan Hankins are still on the market.
The Titans have made an offer for Williams, and seem to be Baltimore’s main competition for his services. A hole-plugging mammoth of a nose tackle, Williams would be a perfect addition for the Titans defensive line and immediately become an impact starter.
Brynden Trawick
Another of the Oakland Raiders’ special teams unit, Trawick gives the TItans two core special teamers with their first three free agent signings. The Titans have realized their main weakness and have shored it up quickly. Reported by Jason La Canfora.
Karl Klug, Nate Palmer
The Titans re-signed Klug and Palmer. Palmer is solid linebacker depth and Klug is great as a rotational pass rusher. Titans fans should be glad that both are back.
Daren Bates
The Titans’ second signing is Daren Bates, a special teams “ace” formerly of the St. Louis Rams. Bates was a special teams captain and should greatly help a poor special teams unit that has struggled for years.
Jonathan Cyprien
The Titans’ first reported signing comes from a division rival. Jonathan Cyprien will sign with the Titans. The former Jacksonville Jaguars strong safety will form a nice complementary pairing with Kevin Byard. Cyprien was Pro Football Focus’ second ranked safety in this free agent class (ahead of Eric Berry and slightly behind Tony Jefferson) and is a fierce run stopper from the safety position. His signing will, presumably, allow Byard to play a center field safety role, a position where his ballhawking skill will be put to great use.
Brandin Cooks
UPDATE: The Titans apparently have a standing offer for Cooks. We don’t know what that offer is, but I can’t imagine it’s anything more than the No. 18 pick. Stay tuned.
After a bunch of misinformation came out about the Titans offering the #18 pick to the Saints and getting turned down, Cooks is still a Saint. But, he’s likely to be traded today, and the field has been narrowed down to the New England Patriots and the Titans. There’s a report floating around about a Malcolm Butler (and more) for Brandin Cooks swap, so I’m not sure what the Titans will offer for him.
Dont’a Hightower
There has been conflicting reports about Hightower as well. I’ll tell the story in tweets.
We’ll see what happens.
A.J. Bouye
UPDATE: Bouye is likely to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Titans miss out on the top corner on the market, and he goes to a division rival.
According to Aaron Wilson, Bouye is expected to command a contract that’s worth upwards of $12M per year. Many teams are fighting for his services, including all of the AFC South teams. The Titans have serious competition to get his signature, but they can match any other team’s offer and seem to have a brighter future than the others involved.
Terrelle Pryor
UPDATE: Terrelle Pryor is visiting the Washington Redskins. The Titans haven’t shown much interest.
According to Mary Kay Cabot, Pryor has drawn interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers, the New York Giants, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Titans. Reports are that his price tag is around $10M per year, which has scared away some teams. That number could come down, but Pryor seems to be the backup option for the team that is priced out (or doesn’t want to pay) of the Alshon Jeffery sweepstakes. If the Cooks trade doesn’t happen, I think the Titans have a real shot at Pryor.

Al Woods
Woods has been released by the team. His cutting saves the team $2.75M this year (his base salary) and an additional $1.25M guarantee they had to pay him next Monday. But the team will take a $1.5M cap hit due to his release, although that shouldn’t be too big of a worry considering the team’s massive cap space.
Anthony Fasano
UPDATE: Fasano is expected to sign with the Miami Dolphins. That leaves a hole at secondary.blocking tight end. The Titans will surely address the position through the draft now.
According to Paul Schwartz, both New York teams, the Jets and the Giants, have expressed interest in signing Fasano. The Titans would like to bring him back, but it looks likely that they’ll have to bid for his services. Fasano is coming off a really good season as the Titans second tight end.
Brian Schwenke
According to Ian Rapoport, Schwenke has drawn interest from the Jets and the Seattle Seahawks, in addition to the Titans, who would like him back. Schwenke would probably start for both of those teams, so I’m not sure how the Titans will be able to persuade him to come back as a backup. Schwenke was very good in limited work last season.
Phillip Supernaw, Antonio Andrews, Justin Staples
According to Terry McCormick, all three of those Titans will not be tendered as restricted free agents. That means they will hit the open market as unrestricted free agents. Supernaw is still wanted back, but Andrews and Staples are more than likely going to sign elsewhere.
