Titans vs. Colts: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

The Titans lost a costly game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday 24-17. This game could be the final nail in the coffin for their playoff chances. Although there was plenty of bad to go around, this game had its fair share of bright moments as well. Here is this week’s addition of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

The Good.

• Brice McCain had his best game as a Titan. He made a few critical plays for the team, one stopping T.Y. Hilton on a critical 3rd down, and another time recording an interception at a crucial moment. If the Titans had won, I’d say he deserved a game ball.

• Marcus Mariota had another multiple touchdown performance and didn’t commit any turnovers.

• Derrick Morgan had a really good game, recording a sack and a half and getting multiple pressures.

• Tajae Sharpe carried the momentum from last game over to this one. He had 4 catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. He seemed to be Mariota’s safety net.

The Bad.

• Play calling. There was a lot of things off in this one. Multiple plays running DeMarco from the shotgun like Philadelphia tried to do, and not sending the receivers past the first down on third downs.

• The offensive line didn’t look like the dominant unit that it’s been. The guards let a lot of penetration come through the middle.

• Marcus Mariota made some bad decisions, one off the top of my head was throwing to Tajae Sharpe in triple coverage.

• Jack Conklin missed a block which led to a free sack on Mariota.

• Penalties really hurt the team in this one, on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

    • The Ugly.

    • The whole first half was ugly. The pass rush wasn’t there, the offensive line couldn’t open up run lanes or protect Mariota, and as usual the secondary couldn’t cover their guy. The Titans were able to score just before halftime, ending the first half down 21-7.

    • Kevin Byard beautifully jumped a receiver’s route for an interception, but he landed out of bounds, so it didn’t count.

    • DeMarco Murray wasn’t able to convert a fourth and one play, which essentially put the game out of reach.

    • Taylor Lewan went down late in the fourth quarter with an injury. We’re not sure how serious it is, but he didn’t return.

    This loss is a hard one to accept. The Titans have a better, more complete roster, but they’re clueless as to how to beat the Colts. Their problem clearly lies in the Colts being able to expose the Titans weakness in the secondary, and the Titans inability to expose the Colts weakness at the offensive line position.
