If you saw my story yesterday, you know that while I was disappointed that the Tennessee Titans postponed their scrimmage on Saturday, it gave me time to figure out some questions I wanted them to answer.

Let’s check back now:

Did Jason McCourty make an appearance?

For all of the issues the Titans have had at cornerback last year, I was disappointed that there was no real news on Jason McCourty. Well that changed during the scrimmage yesterday.

Reportedly, McCourty had several great reps in coverage including a strip that ended up in an interception from a trailing David Bass. Those are the kind of plays that the secondary didn’t make last year that they need to make this year if they are going to take a step forward.

  • Did Jack Conklin show off?

Not really, but he continued to be steady. The offense was very productive in the redzone, specifically running the ball. That really can’t be the case if your offensive line isn’t working well and if your rookie right tackle isn’t making sure that either Derrick Morgan and Brian Orakpo are blocked.

Did Rishard Matthews make a play?

Yes, he did in fact. According to those there, Matthews made a very good catch in the back of the endzone for a touchdown. If the Titans have wide receivers that will consistently be where they are supposed to be and ones that finish plays, I trust Marcus Mariota to find them.

Did Derrick Henry get in the open field?

Again yes. Despite the defense doing a lot of good things, Henry did a great job consistently. He pushed forward in the redzone and made great, short-runs including touchdowns. However, he did everything, including ripping off a huge 25+ yard run, where it would have been VERY hard to tackle him if he was running full speed towards a safety.

So all in all, it was a very good scrimmage from my perspective. Would I have liked more eyes on the OL? Absolutely, but you can’t be upset for the coverage focusing on the interesting battles going on at running back and wide receiver.

With all the good publicity that the defense was getting, I will just take it as a great sign that we didn’t hear or see anything about Derrick Morgan or Brian Orakpo. That means that Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin were doing their jobs, which was a huge question mark about half way through last season.
