Rashad Johnson was one of the key additions in this year’s free agency signing. He joins the Titans from Arizona on a one year deal. After hearing him speak in the pre-training camp press conference I only wish the deal was longer, but I trust Jon Robinson knows what he’s doing at this point.

Rashad Johnson was signed to be a play maker in the secondary coming off a five interception season, but to also be a veteran presence for the young players. In the press conference he had a few interesting comments that I will summarize for you. He was really out spoken and gave a little more detail than other players who mainly spoke about being excited to be back (which is great) and what he did after mini camp.

  • I was really inspired by what I heard him say about Kevin Byard. Johnson was only signed to a one year deal and the team then drafted Byard in the third round of this year’s draft to essentially take Johnson’s job it would seem. Instead of being sour or frustrated by this decision the team made Johnson said he will do whatever it takes to help Byard be the best player he could be. He made it clear he wouldn’t be withholding any secrets or tricks to the trade from the rookie, and that he believes the best player should play.

When asked about his personal goals his answer was what every true professionals should be, “To be better than the year before, I had 5 interceptions last year so 6 or 7 would be great.”. Turn overs is what wins football games, look what it did for the Denver Broncos who lead the league in turn overs last year. If he can pull off 6 or 7 interceptions that would be great for the team.

He also had a few thoughts on the facilities remodel. The team was thoroughly impressed, but Johnson saw it in a different way. Saying the team has to change. Saying this kind of symbolizes this. It’s got to be a new team with a new mind set. It has to have the winning mind set, and this is a way management is trying to help change that mind set by changing everything.

This next one may surprise you. He was asked about all the receivers and how none are truly proven which one he believes will have a big year. His answer? Justin Hunter. That’s right. His explanation “he’s a big guy, he’s playing real physical right now, and he’s really fast. He a lot faster than he looks.”.

So from Rashad Johnson and all Titans fans don’t sleep on us. It seems as though we’re light years a head of last year, and we’re ready to win some football games!
