I don’t want to blow anyone’s minds here, but the Tennessee Titans were not a good team last year. They had some nice pieces, and some great foundational player (Marcus Mariota, Jurrell Casey, Taylor Lewan, etc.) but the team wasn’t great.

So, it should come as no surprise that many people are going to look at the young talent they have and expect some improvement from this team. For all the jokes that people make about Mike Mularkey, he and Jon Robinson have a clear vision for this team and they are taking no half-measures to see that vision take hold.

Now that the roster is looking better and now that they have an easier schedule, improvement seems inevitable. However, Rotoviz took it a step farther in their metrics, and ultimately found that the Tennessee Titans should be the second most improved team in the league, behind the New York Giants.

  • Now, don’t misread that and think that they are going to be the second best team in the league, of course not. This is a conservative indicator of upside potential, and the potential to win against their schedule.

Here is their quote on the Titans specifically:

“According to Pythagenpat, the Titans were a 4.2 win quality team despite winning only three games. Combine that with a cushy schedule thanks to facing the other last place teams in the AFC and the Titans are favored to win at least five games.”

So conservatively they are predicting the Titans to win just over five games. That is a decent jump, but probably no one is going to be doing flips over a 5-11 win season. But don’t look at it like that, look at it for what it is.

The Tennessee Titans are the second most likely team to improve in the entire NFL. While they cap their metric says that means two extra wins, that doesn’t mean that is where they are going to stop.

Even if these metrics hold true and the Titans do finish that poorly, it could excite fans to know that they would be projected to have the #3 and #7 overall picks in the 2017 NFL Draft, behind the two most quarterback needy teams in the NFL: the San Francisco 49ers and the Cleveland Browns.
