Would you sign Nate Washington?

Nate Washington isn’t making the splash that many thought he could in New England, and I question if his roster spot is safe.

More from Titans News

The New England Patriots own website lists Washington as “on the bubble” and had this to say:

“Washington can still run and could provide a deep threat but he seemed to struggle getting on the same page as Tom Brady during OTAs and mini-camp. He’ll need to impress during the summer to win a spot, especially considering the Patriots could very well stick with just five at the position.”

The Patriots are a rhythm offense and like the site says, they might not keep more than five at the position. With four locks, that puts him against the odds of making the team as it stands.

However, the bright side for Nate Washington is that he is apparently physically fit enough to play the position. It seems like the complex series of checks at the line, hot reads, sight adjustments, and the control the quarterback has at the line of scrimmage are the obstacles in his way.

That’s right, this could be the perfect time to bring back Nate Washington and let him retire as a Tennessee Titan.

There is a number crunch at wide receiver as it is, but in then end are the Titans really too talented at the position to bring back the man who WAS their receiving threat for his time in Tennessee?

Not to mention that his 658 yards would have lead the Tennessee wide receivers last year, so he still has something left in the tank.

Is it too late to bring Nate Washington back? I don’t think so, and Jon Robinson will have plenty of reliable sources inside that organization to figure out just what kind of shape he is in and if he can help the Titans.

Right now, this is who the Tennessee Titans have at wide receiver:

    1. Dorial Green-Beckham

    2. Kendall Wright

    3. Rishard Matthews

    4. Tajae Sharpe

    5. Harry Douglas

    6. Justin Hunter

    7. Andrew Turzilli

    8. Tre McBride

Now, those top four are locks for the team. After that the list becomes muddy.

Is Harry Douglas better than Nate Washington? Washington did outplay him last year with a worse quarterback, and he wasn’t even the #1 option on that offense.

Justin Hunter has continued to be fun to watch in flashes during the preseason, but it never manifests into something that you can depend on. Whether it is drops or injuries he just hasn’t done it (which kills me to say as a University of Tennessee alumnus).

Andrew Turzilli has to serve a drug suspension and really hasn’t done anything to stand out anyway.

Tre McBride should be the team’s return man, but it they refuse to let go of Dexter McCluster then he may not have much value on this team.

So, can you really say that there is no way the Tennessee Titans should bring back Nate Washington? The guy has had a great career and has had only one season with less than 600 yards, and that came in his 2nd year in the NFL where he still managed to grab 5 touchdown passes.

He is a sure-handed, deep ball threat who can also attack the intermediate level and take off. He has had a catch and run of at least 49 yards in each of the last 6 seasons, including three years with catches of more than 71 yards.

The Titans need to find ways to make more big plays, and Marcus Mariota throwing to Nate Washington just seems right. Jon Robinson needs to bring that man home.
