The Tennessee Titans had a lot of question marks coming off of the league’s worst season in 2015. However, the offseason resolved a lot of those issues, but the biggest question still left was: who is the Tennessee Titans left guard?

More from Titans Draft

Well, the man that started out at the position in today’s mandatory mini-camp was Quinton Spain. Now, I know that with names like Sebastian Tretola and Jeremiah Poutasi being the odds on favorite to win the job in most people’s mind, you might be confused.

But, even some Tennessee Titans fans forget that it was Spain who started six games last year at left guard after injuries destroyed that offensive line. It seems that Mike Mularkey is going to let the players that actually played at the end of the year start out with pole position.

  • Mularkey said that so far Spain hasn’t done anything to lose the job, which at this point just means that he has been studying his playbook and that he is conditioned. While both are good, I will be really interested to see if his playing time next to Taylor Lewan doesn’t become a bigger factor than either of those at the end of the day.

Think about it, with the projected starters from left to right being Lewan, Spain, Ben Jones, Chance Warmack, and Jack Conklin, only Spain and Lewan have any experience next to each other. That chemistry could be what gives Spain the slight edge once the pads come on.

I still think that players like Jeremiah Poutasi and Sebastian Tretola (who got second team reps today) will have a chance to make a play for the starting job too. Both of those players look a lot better on the field than off of it given their aggression.

If Poutasi can get his feet correct now that he is inside, people really need to consider him a possibility for the job. Likewise, if Tretola can adapt to the NFL speed quickly and figure out how to play with a little more technical proficiency then he could be someone to watch too.

Either way, having three starting caliber guards competing for left guard is great, especially when Chance Warmack is facing free agency next year.

Will the Tennessee Titans change things up tomorrow to see how that affects things? Or are they going to move forward with the idea that until Spain messes up (if that happens) then he is their guy? It will be one of the most interesting position battles to monitor this year.
