Could the Titans Keep Five Running Backs?
As it stands right now the Tians have seven running backs on the roster. They include Demarco Murray, Derrick Henry, Bishop Sankey, Dexter Mcluster, David Cobb, Antonio Andrews, and David Fluellen. The question is will Tennessee try to retain as many of them as possible, or will they use that depth at another position?
The Safe Side
On the safe side which should be locks to make the team are Demarco Murray, Derrick Henry, and Dexter Mcluster. Demarco Murray is in the Titan’s plan to be the featured back, Derrick Henry is in the plan to rest Murray so the Titans don’t lose a step when bringing a substitute in, and Dexter Mcluster is just the all around guy who can be used as a running back, slot receiver, and return specialist. The coaching staff and players raved about the plays Demarco and Derrick made at this weeks OTA’s. In interviews you always heard them say they made great cuts or they always busted into the secondary. The coaching staff also loves Dexter and even stripped Taylor Lewan of his team captain title and gave it to Dexter when Mike Mularkey took over.
On The Way Out
The running backs I don’t see making the cut are Bishop Sankey and David Fluellen. David Fluellen mostly stuck around on the Titan’s practice squad and played preseason games. Bishop Sankey on the other hand the Titans gave a second round pick for. The team tried to use Sankey in many different ways, but he just couldn’t seem to succeed in any of them. He lost his starting job in the 2015 season and never really recovered from there.
The Competition
The competition here really comes down to Antonio Andrews and David Cobb. Antonio was originally on the Titan’s practice squad, but when buffalo tried to sign him Tennessee moved him up to their 53 man roster. Eventually Antonio went on to take Bishop Sankey’s job as the starter in Tennessee, and that story is why he’s a fan favorite here. David Cobb was just drafted in 2015 but spent most of last season injured, so we didn’t really see to much of him. He had a few nice runs last year, but we still don’t really know how good he is. It is possible for both of these guys to make the roster, but both are currently on the bubble. One of them should deffaintly make it considering Demarco’s injury history and how much Derrick Henry was used at Alabama last year.

Can the Titans retain 5 of their 7 running backs? The answer is yes, but asking if they will that’s really up in the air. They should have at least four for an issuance policy. I could possibly see them working Andrews in with Demarco Murray or Derrick Henry, and Jalston Fowler in a full house set, or maybe teaching Andrews the full back role as well. Andrews may even be trade bait, although teams wouldn’t give much if anything for him. This really revolves around how good David Cobb is.
