Monday morning has brought a lot of new rumors and information surrounding the Tennessee Titans and the 2016 NFL Draft. According to two separate sources, it looks like the Titans have identified someone as a likely candidate to trade for their first pick in the draft.

More from Titans Draft

The best place to start is with the Monday Morning Quarterback piece today, where Peter King is reporting that there is significant trade interest in the Titans. Look at these excerpt:

“The Titans, holders of the first pick in the draft, will have a chance to make a deal. The Titans have received significant interest in the pick. I believe it is now 50-50 whether Tennessee will trade it or keep it. Rookie GM Jon Robinson is going to have to decide whether to accept an offer—presumably by a team that wants one of the top two quarterbacks in the draft, Carson Wentz of North Dakota State or Cal’s Jared Goff—or to stay at number one and pick a player the Titans believe will be a cornerstone for years to come…

But the top of the draft is in flux, and I will not be surprised if in the next three weeks the Titans move the pick for an additional high pick or picks—even though there’s not the Andrew Luck or Marcus Mariota out there for a team to move up and grab. But there are teams like San Francisco or Los Angeles or Philadelphia that might want a quarterback, and might be desperate enough to overpay for the top pick.”

  • That is a lot of information to swallow, but what it essentially means to me is this.

    1. King is hearing that there are trade offers that have already been floated out to the Titans, and they are enticing enough that the Titans are sending back counters instead of scoffing. That is somewhat surprising this far away from the 2016 NFL Draft.

    2. Three teams that have been mentioned by Paul Kuharsky as potential suitors are mentioned again in this article.

    3. The trade may hinge on if the Tennessee Titans feel like there is “cornerstone” caliber player with the 7th pick in the draft (where the San Francisco 49ers currently sit) or if they can find several high quality supplementary players in the middle of the first round and in a deep second round (the Los Angeles Rams have two second round picks).

Alright, so that is all fine and good and we have heard that conjecture before. But wait, just hours after the MMQB was published, this happened.

Jason Cole is reporting that the 49ers HAVE had conversations with the Tennessee Titans about the top pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. There is a video attached to that link that you should watch before continuing.

So, let’s put two and two together:

    1. San Francisco was mentioned in the piece where Peter King said that there was a 50/50 chance the Tennessee Titans trade their first overall pick.

    2. It is clear that the Tennessee Titans want a cornerstone piece in the first round, something they could believe they could find at 7th overall.

    3. Hours later Jason Cole finds out the 49ers have had conversations with the Titans.

    4. There is speculation that now more than ever the chances are that the 49ers are going to move Colin Kaepernick to the Denver Broncos.

That is a pretty strong theory that makes a lot of sense.

Now that we know who may be interested, I am about to publish a story that outlines what it would take to get the Tennessee Titans draft pick if you are the San Francisco 49ers so be on the look out for that.
