The Tennessee Titans desperately needed to fix the secondary and frankly, they may have done it.

More from Titans Draft

Going into this free agency period they needed to address the cornerback depth with at least two cornerbacks so that they could let some other guys walk.

Well, the Titans brought in Brice McCain before the free agent period actually started. McCain will likely compete for the nickel job and could be used on special teams. They didn’t stop there, grabbing Antwon Blake (a former Dick LeBeau player in Pittsburgh) who should compete for time on the outside as well as special teams.

That wasn’t all they had to do however. The Titans made another hole at free safety after the release of veteran safety Michael Griffin. His age and cap hit made it a business decision to cut him.

  • While Griffin was older, it was his play on the field that had some Titans fans in an uproar and I think he was mostly just the face and name that the fan base latched on to when trying to identify trouble on the back end. Say what you will about him as a player, but he was definitely well respected in that locker room and he was one of the few leaders on this team.

Well, now they may have found another leader at the safety position: Rashad Johnson.

Rashad Johnson was with the Arizona Cardinals last year where he recorded five interceptions, which was tied for second most in the NFL last year for safeties.

Not only did he have a good year last year, he was also well respected by his teammates. Different reports have him being praised by team leaders (Larry Fitzgerald for instance).

Kent Somers who covers the Arizona Cardinals said that, “in [Rashad Johnson] Titans getting smart player who already knows def system. no one had more respect in #azcardinals locker room” which says it all.

With good game film, understanding of the defense and his ability to be a leader in the locker room the only question for the Titans is what took so long? I would imagine that the Titans wisely didn’t want to overpay and that they slowplayed this deal.

Well, for now at least chalk this up as another win for Jon Robinson who filled his last major hole in the draft and now is not forced to take any position on Draft Day. Those Jalen Ramsey rumors may get a little quieter now with the addition of Johnson.
