The Tennessee Titans are not finished in free agency, and while there aren’t many crown jewels left in this class, this is where a good GM makes his money.

Over the years, when Jon Robinson has been with the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they don’t “win” the first week of free agency as much as fans would like for them to. What they do instead, is they win this second and third wave of free agency finding serviceable players, making trades and getting valuable depth.

Look at how the New England Patriots have spent their offseason. They didn’t go out and throw money at anyone, but they did make a nice trade to swap some talented players and get a pick.

  • With that new pick, they leveraged a fourth round pick to get another piece their offense was missing. After that, they signed a veteran to a cheap contract (Chris Long) and set themselves up for a very good year.

Likewise, the Tennessee Titans have traded for a big position of need essentially stealing DeMarco Murray from the Philadelphia Eagles, and solidified their team. They also quietly filled holes at center, wide receiver, cornerback (two depth players), and right tackle (depth) after yesterday.

So, what is next for the Titans? Well, the only major need position that hasn’t been addressed in some way at this point, is safety.

While Jon Robinson’s model to this point has been get young guys in and make this team more talented with player that potentially still have upside, this may be where we start to see that change.

With all eyes on the safety position, here are some of the top guys out there:

    Reggie Nelson

-It isn’t a great sign that his former DC Mike Zimmer didn’t bring him in once he hit free agency, but that may be because Jerry Gray (former Titans DC) was really pounding the table for Michael Griffin. At 32, he doesn’t fit the model but he is an ideal free safety who is coming off of his best year with 8 interceptions. Nelson has only had one year with less than two interceptions, and has only missed six games in a nine-year career.

    Tony Jefferson

-I honestly have no idea why Jefferson hasn’t been signed. He is and RFA but that just means that the Arizona Cardinals have a chance to match any contract he is offered. He is a 24 year old safety who has played in every game in his career in some form. He is coming off of a career year with three forced fumbles and two interceptions, and he would be a great fit for this team.

    Rashad Johnson

-The only safety the Titans have brought in so far, Johnson seems like a good fit for this team. He is an intelligent leader who had a very nice year last year, and if it wasn’t for a crowded safety group in Arizona he would probably already be back there.

    Will Allen

-Allen is probably the second most likely player on this list to end up with the Titans. He played for Dick LeBeau for five years in Pittsburgh and so far the Titans have been grabbing every defensive player they can get from the Steelers. He is another older guy at 33 and he has never had an elite season from a production standpoint, but he could be the leader on the field for this defense given his knowledge of the system.
