The Tennessee Titans are hitting the ground running in free agency, and are apparently ready to offer one of the blue-chip players some great money.

More from Titans Free Agency

Damon “Snacks” Harrison was the nose tackle for the New York Jets, and to say he is highly rated among interior defenders is an understatement. According to Jason Cole of Bleacher report (who admittedly has had some screw ups before with the Tennessee Titans) the team is willing to pay Harrison the contract he wants and that they are the “most interested team”.

Some more on Snacks that you may not know: on PFF’s free agent list, he is one of only three “blue-chip” free agents set to hit the market after a round of franchise tags.

  • In their interior defender rankings, PFF has only J.J. Watt, Aaron Donald, Linval Joseph, Geno Atkins, Derek Wolfe, Ndamukong Suh. Of those guys, only Watt, Donald and Wolfe are younger than Harrison and they will likely make about $3-5 million more annually.

Quoting a story I wrote earlier on this site, here are some of my thoughts on Harrison as a player:

"“Many people don’t know who Harrison is, and that is fine. If you know a true NT in the NFL it is usually because they are getting blown off the ball so much that you can see the name on the back of their jersey or because they are free lancing and not doing what they are supposed too.For a team so bad against the run last year, it would probably help to have the league’s best interior run stuffer (according to PFF) on the team. That’s right, for all the negative plays that other players get, it is Harrison that offensive linemen truly can’t block. With Sammie Hill coming off of the books, the Titans will need to at least consider replacing him with a starting caliber player and Harrison would be perfect. The best thing is, they could pay him premium money for the position and it wouldn’t even be a real drop in the bucket for the Titans. The average cost per year of the highest paid NTs in the league is $4.5 million. If the Titans could sign Snacks (Harrison’s nickname) to a four year, $22 million deal they would get him in the prime of his career (27-31) and instantly improve their run defense.Dick LeBeau gets his Casey Hampton 2.0, and Snacks gets a great contract to play next to Jurrell Casey, DaQuan Jones, Brian Orakpo, and Derrick Morgan on a Dick LeBeau defense. That is a great deal and both teams would benefit greatly.”"

Those were a lot of my thoughts on Harrison at the time, and they are largely unchanged. Harrison is a great nose tackle that will allow Casey to play the 3-tech in their 4-3 sub-package, which adds even more value.

I think it is so smart for the Titans to look at Harrison, and for me this is maybe the best possible start to free agency that Jon Robinson could have had in my opinion. I think Titans fans should love the approach (especially in this offseason given the talent available) of adding young, proven grinders in free agency and splash players in the draft.
