According to Paul Kuharsky, Mike Florio asked Marcus Mariota if he had any input on coaches. Apparently, he said that there were two coaches he had input on: Mike Mularkey and Chip Kelly.

If that is true, then I think it just reaffirms what we already know about Marcus Mariota and his personality. Despite his electric ability on the field, Mariota is a humble and relatively low-key person off the field much like Mike Mularkey.

Chip Kelly on the other hand is known for being very rigid and making changes to everything from a player’s diet to their sleep schedule.

  • It may be that Marcus Mariota’s transition to the NFL and his connection to so many of the former Oregon Ducks who played for Chip Kelly last year, may have yielded some more information on Kelly than what he had in college.

While I am sure they had a good time (and that they enjoyed success) in college, the NFL is a different beast and you can’t just control grown men and their schedules like you can in college. His stringent rules have even led to some good players being cut or allowed to hit free agency.

Now, is Kelly a great coach and should the Titans have hired him? Maybe, I mean if you discount his time as the behind the scenes GM he did have a very good run winning 20 games in two years. However, it is likely that if Mariota stood up for him then he would have at least gotten an interview.

Mariota being calm and cool-headed as always probably either declined to comment or stood behind Mike Mularkey. Either way, it doesn’t appear like Mariota had anything extraordinary to say about Kelly.

It will be interesting to see how all this plays out, because it essentially guarantees that Mariota will have consistency and an easier playbook to manage. With his first year already historic, could he be in for an even bigger year two?
