By Will Lomas
For the first time in seemingly forever the Tennessee Titans have won a game at home. They now have 3 wins on the season, which is more than last season so…progress?

Honestly though, Sunday was another clear example that they have a franchise QB in Marcus Mariota who can overcome struggling receivers. Even when the defense hits a bump in the road, Mariota still has it in him to find a way to win and at the end of the day that is all that matters from a QB (especially if he is very accurate, smart, mobile, and just all around great).
So, let’s look at where the national media has the Titans ranked.

“Crazy win for the Titans on Sunday. Their defense couldn’t stop the University of North Texas, much less Blake Bortles, yet that unit delivered the winning score with the fumble recovery on the errant shotgun snap. Then there was Marcus Mariota, who might not be enjoying the team success Jameis Winston is, but who certainly will challenge Winston for the rookie hardware on NFL Honors night. Loved this note from @Gil Brandt. ”

Yep, this was a shining example of just how good Marcus Mariota can be. While Bortles statistically had a better game, Mariota clearly did more with less and is one of the best young quarterbacks in the game.
There is no doubt in my mind that he is deserving of the Rookie of the Year award. Mariota has more passing touchdowns than Winston despite being hurt in the middle of the year and is on pace to break the rookie record in spite of those missed games.

“Good to see Dorial Green-Beckham break out with five catches for 119 yards and a touchdown. Next offseason will be very important for him. How bad does he want to be an elite receiver? If he wants it, he has all the physical skills to be one of the NFL’s best.”

I agree with this and it helps that all signs point to him developing. He hasn’t shut down, and didn’t quit after his caused interception. He came back and responded with his biggest day in the NFL. He also had a good game last week and is slowly turning into a go to receiver for this offense.
If the Titans can get him, Kendall Wright and Delanie Walker going with something in the run game finally working this team could be a hassle down the stretch for opposing defenses.

“Marcus Mariota showed off his rushing skills with an 87-yard scramble on Sunday. Mariota had 112 rushing yards, nearly matching his season total up until that point (137 yards)”

ESPN with the bullet points again, but I think what they are trying to say is that Mariota finally broke one and looks healthy. Earlier in the year he was banged up with an ankle and knee injury from Cleveland and Miami respectively.
I think the running aspect of Mariota will come out next year, especially if there are more spread elements in the offense next year. If the Titans get someone who can get DGB, Kendall Wright, Delanie Walker, and someone in the draft or free agency on an island outside and force the defense to either commit to staying in the box to stop Mariota or give extra coverage outside, then there are no right answers.
