Marcus Mariota and the QB index
By Will Lomas
NFL.com is a lot more fun to visit now that Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans are much more watchable. The offense is humming and is currently one of the best in the league (5th in points allowed) despite not getting a lot of publicity as far as that stat is concerned.

One of the more fun things to look at each week is Gregg Rosenthal’s QB Index that he puts up every Thursday. I tried to stay away from the column in the first two weeks because I wanted a large sample size, but at this point I think we have seen the best (Tampa) and worst (Cleveland) of Marcus Mariota, and actually landed at an average point that gives a good idea what you will see all year (Indy).
So with that in mind I took to the rankings.

This week, Mariota is ranked as the 23rd best quarterback in the league, but it is important to remember that this is more of a lifetime achievement award instead of a weekly accolade, hence why Andrew Luck is in the top-10.
However, look at two comparison of who he is ranked against:
-Jameis Winston is ranked at 29 in the league despite being ranked ahead of Mariota going into the season.
-Mariota is the top ranked quarterback of any first, second or third year player at the position except for Teddy Bridgewater. That means he is ahead of Blake Bortles, Derek Carr, Winston, and Johnny Manziel.
Again, I know it is a small sample size, but he is consistently showing that he is one of the best quarterbacks in the league week after week. Eventually, people will realize that the traits he is showing aren’t those of a fluky quarterback getting lucky or an RG3 clone in a nice system. They are the traits of a cerebral quarterback who just happens to be an elite athlete.
