Marcus Mariota will play extensively in first game
By Will Lomas
Wow, sort of breaking news from Ed Werder here, apparently the Tennessee Titans aren’t going to treat Marcus Mariota with kid gloves. His tweet linked above says this:
“In #NFL preseason debut, Marcus Mariota expected to play extensively, more than series. Will be feel decision for #Titans coaches”
More from Titans Draft
- Tennessee Titans suspiciously quiet about major draft need
- 3 needs that are being overblown by Tennessee Titans fans
- Tennessee Titans must be careful trading down in the 2023 NFL Draft
- Tennessee Titans should only spend their premium draft picks on offense
- Tennessee Titans connections may be crucial for a draft day trade
So not only are the Tennessee Titans going to play him for more than a full series, they don’t really have a time frame on how long he is going to be out there.
This should actually be a really solid look at where Marcus Mariota is against live competition, not only for a few scripted plays but after he gets a chance to make an adjustment.
Jim Wyatt posted something on the Tennessee Titans official site that gives a good definition of what you should really be looking for in this extended time from Marcus Mariota:
“After a solid offseason, he’s thrown 186 passes without an interception in camp, and displayed plenty of poise along the way. In the pocket, he’s looked comfortable. He’s made good, quick decisions. But his work will be put to the test against the Falcons, when he’ll shed the red jersey and open himself up to being hit.”

So basically what this means is, he has been careful (not conservative) with the ball this offseason, but there has also been very little threat of him actually getting hit. This is a good chance to see how the Tennessee Titans offensive line can protect Mariota.
If the Atlanta Falcons do get in the backfield, how quickly and how well can the rookie bounce back and get to his talented form. Over the course of camp he has been very good at this, as seen by his great play after small, bad patches.
I think this is one of the most exciting games the Tennessee Titans have played in the last few years and there is so much to watch. Between Marcus Mariota, Dorial Green-Beckham’s return to football, Taylor Lewan back on the field, the new running backs, Kendall Wright- I could go on and on, but the point is that this is an exciting time to be a Tennessee Titans fan and a good game tonight could really build up the hype for this team.
