Tennessee Titans: What we learned from today’s press conferences

facebooktwitterreddit

The Tennessee Titans reported to training camp today, highlighted by head coach Ken Whisenhunt, qb Marcus Mariota, and left tackle Taylor Lewan fielding a variety of questions from the media.

Plenty was said, giving us a clearer picture of where the team is…and what to expect when practice starts tomorrow morning.

*Ken Whisenhunt stated that it would be easier for him to name the position groups that he’s happy with, than to name the ones that concern him. He praised the defensive line, inside linebackers, and tight ends…not a hard selection given the fact that four of Tennessee’s best players occupy those positions (Jurrell Casey – DT, Delanie Walker – TE, Zach Brown/Avery Williamson – ILBs).

*The Titans want to give rookie qb Marcus Mariota enough plays to diversify the offense, while guarding against giving him too much…too soon.

*The same can be said for rookie wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham. Coach Whiz is eager to get him on the field, and eluded to specific packages being drawn up for him early on. But he warned the media and fans alike…DGB will be brought along at a slower pace than we’d probably like to see….duly noted coach.

*Justin Hunter, the troubled wide receiver that DGB was brought in to push, will see the field tomorrow and participate in practice. Hunter faces charges for felony assault, which puts more than just his chance to start this year in jeopardy…but Tennessee is electing to take the wait and see approach. Hunter hasn’t publicly addressed the allegations.

*Starting left tackle Taylor Lewan certainly addressed some allegations, and was brutally honest when assessing the Titans’ offensive line last season. He called them soft….a direct shot to the gut of any human being with pride. He wants this year’s line to be chippy…gritty…and salty…all words used by Lewan himself. But remember, coach Whiz just got through praising his defensive line….Lewan and company will get tested right away in camp.

*Marcus Mariota was…well…Marcus Mariota. The media machine said all the right things as expected, even shedding a little humor to the rumor that not being allowed to surfboard held up contract negotiations. Mariota stated that he was back home surfboarding with friends, unaware of the rumor at the time. His quote…

“The faces that people were making when I was out there with a surfboard, was priceless. But we had a lot of fun. It was pretty enjoyable. This time around I was able to stand up and catch a few waves, so it was fun.”

*Training camp opens tomorrow morning at Baptist Sports Park. Practice starts at 9:30am…and is open to the public. Players signing autographs: Taylor Lewan, Avery Williamson, Coty Sensabaugh, Harry Douglas, Damion Stafford, Beau Brinkley, Deon Long, Mike Meyer, Josh Stewart, and Justin Staples.

Football is finally back in Tennessee.
