Could Wes Welker Be A Fit With The Tennessee Titans?
By Les Bailey
You could throw a dart at a Tennessee Titans depth chart and be assured of hitting a position where they could use some help, but at 34 years old, and with the concussion problems, Wes Welker could be more of a liability than what the folks in Music City need at this time.
Fans and coaching staff alike would hold their collective breaths every time he goes over the middle to catch a pass in today’s NFL, that he doesn’t get his bell rung for the last time.
The former San Diego Charger, Miami Dolphin, New England Patriot and Denver Bronco has cleared medical waivers and is looking for a place to play in 2015. And he’s not getting much love!
The guys at 120 Sports make some good points, but the one I had not though about was what you would have to pay for Welker’s name. If his health issues weren’t a concern, the salary he will want should be.
Joe Soriano at the NFL Spinzone covered Welker’s story pretty well, and his possibilities of ending up back in New England, but even the Titans don’t seem to be interested.
"Had Welker done this interview with a show not based in Boston, then I wonder if the New England Patriots angle would have popped up. There’s no real interest here, and any player desperate for any sort of interest wouldn’t rule out signing with a team if asked. Welker will play for anyone, but nobody (not even the Tennessee Titans, who seem to love veteran players and reportedly showed significant interest back when Welker hit the free agent market in 2013) has come knocking."
At 34 years old, the Texas Tech alum probably has a couple of years left in the tank, and would make a nice third-down option for Marcus Mariota, but we have all heard the news with concussions, and their affect on the brain.
Fans and coaching staff alike would hold their collective breaths every time he goes over the middle to catch a pass in today’s NFL, that he doesn’t get his bell rung for the last time.
For a career so far, Welker has 890 receptions for 9822 yards and 50 touchdowns. The guy was a first down machine in his heyday with the Pats.
I’m sure that by the time training camps get underway, and players start falling to injuries around the league, an offer will come. Maybe even from the Tennessee Titans!
