In a strange turn of events the Tennessee Titans have released cornerback Jason McCourty.

Well, I am shocked. The Tennessee Titans have released Jason McCourty according to Ian Rapoport.

Honestly I am a little speechless. The Tennessee Titans were under absolute no cap pressure to release the veteran cornerback, though injuries and a high cap number were undoubtedly the reason why he is no longer with the team.

He was scheduled to be the team’s fifth highest paid player at $7 million this year, trailing only Brian Orakpo, Logan Ryan, Jurrell Casey, and Derrick Morgan.

The cut means that the Tennessee Titans cap room is now up to $43 million which could either signal a potential big money trade (say for Richard Sherman?) or they could just sit on that money I guess.

Regardless this puts the Tennessee Titans in a pinch at cornerback. The only starting cornerbacks on the roster right now that have any chance of starting are:

1. Logan Ryan

2. LeShaun Sims

3. Brice McCain

4. Kalan Reed

And that is absolutely it.

  • The Tennessee Titans were already replacing significant snaps from Perrish Cox and Antwon Blake. While they weren’t good starters, they definitely will be missed in terms of snaps played.

Now this number has skyrocketed. I am really curious to see why a move like this was made so late in the offseason with almost no real reason unless they were looking to make a big move for a cornerback.

Is that cornerback Richard Sherman? Is it Trumaine Johnson? Someone else? No one?

I really have no idea, but with Jon Robinson anything is possible in terms of additions or obviously subtractions.

I would like to say that while I thought McCourty had possibly reached the end with the Tennessee Titans, I really enjoyed him as a player and a person during his tenure. Whether the team was winning or more often losing he always competed at a time when it was easy to quit.

He will be missed by this team in the locker room and I am sure that he could land in the right situation and make his way back to that fringe CB1 territory that he hit during his peak.
