A common theme around the media during the early part of the week is power rankings. Whether they are ranking college football teams, baseball teams, basketball teams, or NFL teams it is something that most major outlets do.

ESPN and NFL.com are no different, and they are the two that I pay the most attention to during the week. They generally use either a composite ranking to get their list, or they have someone assigned to watch every game before they make their list.

With other sites, there is a lot of guess work and assumptions that become pretty clear by around Week 8 and I have no intention of using them in these articles.

So, let’s take a look at how those two sites ranked the Tennessee Titans in their power rankings.

“Tennessee continues to road grade with DeMarco Murray and friends (137 team rushing yards versus the Browns). On Sunday, though, there too was Marcus Mariota, performing as if he once was the second overall pick in the draft. Mariota completed 17 of his 24 passes for 284 yards, three touchdowns and a pick (while also adding 64 yards on seven rushes). Over the last two games, he’s thrown six touchdown passes, while putting up a sterling 125.3 passer rating. The game got a little scary in the end, but not because of him.

Must watch: With 10 minutes to go in the first half, Murray took off on a 16-yard run. Cool. But notice how quickly Mariota accelerates past Murray to throw a block. He was almost at a standstill. #littlethings “

The running game wasn’t there in the first half aside from Mariota’s long run, but give the Titans coaching staff credit. They didn’t panic and force things in the passing game, they found a delicate balance of passes and rushes that got the offense moving efficiently again.

That clip is amazing and it demonstrates how fast Mariota really is. If this team wants to keep winning and climbing up these rankings they will find a smart way to keep capitalizing on his legs.

    ESPN: 22 (26)

“90: No team might be more dependent on quarterback play than Tennessee. The past two seasons the Titans have posted a 90 Total QBR in their wins, the highest QBR in wins over that span. In losses, they’ve posted the third-worst QBR (28.9).”

What a weird combination of quotes from ESPN and NFL. One talks about how the rushing game is so important, the other one talks about QB play. As best as I can tell, that stat means that when the quarterback plays well, the team finds a way to win. When the quarterback isn’t playing well, the team finds a way to lose.

Thank goodness they have a great young quarterback in Marcus Mariota.
