The Tennessee Titans have a big matchup today against the Houston Texans, and they should have every chance to win.

However, if they don’t it will likely be because of three positions on the field that I have on a shortlist of positions the Titans need to get better at this offseason. With four picks in the first three rounds, including two in the first there should be a great chance that these get fixed before the start of the 2017 NFL season.

So, let’s look at the players and positions I have a concern with.

  • Cornerback

Perrish Cox is one interception in Detroit away from being the poster child of why a bend don’t break defense can get teams killed week after week. I don’t think Cox is a great corner, but he could definitely be a serviceable guy in the slot or as a rotational player.

The issue is that neither he or Jason McCourty should be an NFL team’s #1 CB, they just don’t have that explosive playmaking ability that defines those guys at this level.

Ideally, the Titans draft a cornerback and move McCourty to #2, Cox to #3/SCB.

    Wide Receiver

Remember the last time the Titans had a dynamic wide receiver that consistently preformed and stayed healthy? I don’t. And yet, teams around the NFL seem to have them in spades.

The Titans need a true number one receiver if they are going to play this tight offense in the future, because they need someone to win those one-on-one matchups.

That isn’t a cookie cutter guy either, it doesn’t have to be a 6’4 guy who can stretch the field deep and manhandle corners while running the right routes (though that would be great too). It can also be someone who can stretch the field laterally, someone with dynamic speed.

Kendall Wright was a #1 receiver for this team in his first two years, but it seems either coaching disputes or health have caused his role to diminish for whatever reason. So it can be someone like that, but it just can’t be anyone that this team has on the roster now.

    Impact linebacker

I don’t care if it is an EDGE player or an off the ball ILB, this team needs someone who will compliment Avery Williamson’s hard nosed play with some finesse and speed. Someone who can either rush the passer with speed or who can play sideline to sideline at a pace where those zone runs don’t gash the Titans for five yards at a time.

With Derrick Morgan dealing with a hamstring, it may be a month until he is back to his normal self. When that happens you can focus your attention on Jurrell Casey and Brian Orakpo and no one else wins their one-on-ones.

While this defense is solid in points per game, it lacks impact players which means a bad turnover differential and a field position that are killing the offense.
