The Tennessee Titans face the Carolina Panthers this afternoon in Week 2 of the preseason. The end result of the preseason probably doesn’t matter at all, but there are key things to watch that will have an impact on the season.

What constitutes a win?

First downs. Against a great defense like the Carolina Panthers, it would be great for the Titans to get into a rhythm and get multiple first downs on each drive.

I wold love to see them score points and maybe even get a touchdown on the ground, but this team needs to prove that it can move the ball consistently with this run-based offense.

  • Another way that they could really shine is by scoring a play action touchdown against the Panthers. For a team that has seen Cam Newton and that offense in practice everyday, play actions should be really hard to come by. However, a player like Marcus Mariota who can glide on the edge could scare some defenders out of position and if Mariota can get in the redzone he is almost automatic there.

    Players to watch:

DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry will obviously be the top players to watch today. Against a hard-nosed defensive line, the team’s success may be determined by how many one-yard gains these backs can turn into three-yard gains by falling forward.

The offensive line as a whole needs to work in tandem. Obviously Jack Conklin is the big name to watch here, but Chance Warmack, Ben Jones and Quinton Spain have the tough task of trying to move Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short off the ball. On top of that, one of those three will probably be asked to go to the second level and get a hand on Luke Kuechly which is no easy task either.

Speaking of offensive line, Dennis Kelly could have a big day today if he could make some things happen against that second team defense. I believe that he has the size, athleticism and technique to be a swing tackle or a jumbo tight end on this team and make an impact. If he is going to live up to my expectations, today would be a great day to start.

For Justin Hunter it is literally now or never. Not only does he need to have a big day, he needs to be consistent. Against a Panthersteam that lost their star cornerback, he could have a huge day with the second team if he just plays up to his potential. In the wake of the DGB trade no one is safe, least of all Hunter.
