The Tennessee Titans face the Carolina Panthers this afternoon in Week 2 of the preseason. The end result of the preseason probably doesn’t matter at all, but there are key things to watch that will have an impact on the season.

What constitutes a win?

The Carolina Panthers have said that they will probably only play their starters for three full drives on offense. So, the Titans objectives should be pretty clear here. They want negative results for at least two of those drives. That means that two drives that result in either a punt or a turnover would be a win for the defense.

With no game plan, fans shouldn’t be upset if they let the Panthers score on one of those three drives, because they are the defending NFC Champions. If they could hold them to no score or a field goal it would be fantastic, but one score is a good day on those three drives.

  • Players to watch:

Brian Orakpo is someone that didn’t really make an impact last week, but could show up better against weaker offensive tackles

Avery Williamson caught a lot of flak for the Melvin Gordon (from me included) but both Mike Mularkey and Greg Cosell have both said that Wesley Woodyard was responsible for the back on that play and that he read it wrong. The Panthers are a run-heavy team which means he should be a big factor tonight.

Brice McCain may be the only starting cornerback healthy tonight, so he should draw some pretty tough assignments. He is primarily a slot cornerback, but if he can make some plays on the outside against these big Panthers receivers he could earn some time outside.

Kevin Byard made a big play last week, and he has had a phenomenal week in practice. He is going to play safety and return kicks today and if he makes a splash play he could push for playing time immediately.

Austin Johnson and Antwaun Woods both have been battling it out for the nose tackle spot, but it is more likely that we see Woods at nose and Johnson at 5-tech. They are both wide body defenders (though Johnson has more lateral agility) so it will be interesting to see how they handle this run-first Panthers team.
