Jon Robinson wants less sentimentality for Titans

Jon Robinson doesn’t want to keep players aren’t that aren’t going to help the Tennessee Titans win.

More from Titans Draft

While that may sound obvious, it is a problem that has plagued teams across the league forever. Very few coaches and GMs are willing to make the unpopular move to trade or cut a player that may be on the back part of his career.

Of the top of my head, the only one that has consistently done it is one of Jon Robinson’s influences: Bill Belichick. He has always been pragmatic in his views and most recently let Vince Wilfork go to the Texans were he showed that he wasn’t the same player anymore.

  • In a recent article from Paul Kuharsky at ESPN, Jon Robinson explained how he has to look at players on his roster:

“Right, wrong, or indifferent, that’s what we have to go with. … We want to grow, we want to feel one, we want to feel family and we’re all working toward a common goal. Yet, you have to be judicious and understand that we’re in the sports/entertainment business at the end of the day.”

What that boils down to is that even if you like a player, you have to know when your feelings as a person cloud your responsibility as a GM. However, you still have to make a team feel like a family and really commit to your vision or else it is hard to get that important cohesion.

It is hard for us as fans to see these players as people, but the problem is just the opposite for Jon Robinson. On any day he may be talking to a player about his wife and kids, and then tomorrow he has to cut him because someone with a slightly higher chance of helping the Titans hits the waiver wire.

    More from Titan Sized

There are some names that Titans fans want to see gone no matter how good of a player they are. Dexter McCluster, Brian Schwenke and Bishop Sankey all come to mind. However, there may be some sort of personality that they give the team that goes beyond what we see.

McCluster especially is almost a lock to make the roster despite the logjam at the running back position for the Titans. He is apparently a big help on special teams and in the locker room, and for whatever reason Mike Mularkey loves him.

Now, does Jon Robinson feel the same way? I don’t know. However, I do know that if we see one of those guys cut or traded, you can safely say that the Titans are not going to be a sentimental team. And lock Jon Robinson said, you have to understand that it is a business.
