The Tennessee Titans spent the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Miami quarterback Cam Ward. It was a decision that everyone saw coming and Titans fans are hoping that the franchise has its next superstar at the quarterback position.
Speaking of superstar quarterbacks, Warren Moon recently gave the Titans' newest quarterback permission to wear his famous number 1 jersey. Moon's jersey had been retired by the organization in 2006 but Moon clearly sees enough in Ward to give him permission to unretire the number one and let a new guy wear it.
Having your jersey retired is a huge honor and it's not often that guys decide to let someone else don a number they made famous so what gives? What else might have inspired Moon to do this?
According to Sam Phalen on X, "Warren Moon just indicated to me that the Oilers uniforms may never return for the #Titans. It factored into his decision to allow Cam Ward to wear No. 1. Moon said the Titans will have new uniforms coming out soon, and there will be no reason to bring back Oilers uniforms."

The Titans didn't wear the old Houston Oilers throwbacks much in recent years (and whenever they did, it tended to end poorly for them on the field) but now it appears that those days might officially be over. Moon indicated that the team is going to be getting new uniforms, which will phase out wearing the old Oilers ones.
It makes sense that Moon would be prompted to unretire his jersey if this is the case since he was never technically a Tennessee Titan and only took snaps for the Houston Oilers before the franchise relocated to Nashville. With the Titans coming out with new jerseys and not going back to the old Oilers ones for throwback games, Moon probably has no issue with Ward wearing number 1 since Moon never wore it for the Titans.
It's still a classy gesture from Moon and hopefully he continues to make the number one jersey look good for the Titans organization.
